Sophie Cunningham said that roughly "35 people" had sent her the tweet.
If fans were curious, Cunningham satiated their curiosity on Thursday. During the latest episode of her podcast, Show Me Something, the Indiana Fever sharpshooter confirmed that she is aware of Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr.'s controversial comments this week on the Ball in the Family podcast.
Porter and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Lonzo Ball both claimed this week that, as teenagers, they could have defeated a team of WNBA players -- with Porter controversially saying he could have done so as an eighth-grader. The comments received swift blowback on social media, especially as Porter claimed that he had sharpened his skills against Cunningham -- even though Cunningham is two years older than Porter and began attending the University of Missouri two years before him.
Cunningham: MPJ was "clickbaited," taken out of context
Despite Porter's declarations, Cunningham sympathizes with her fellow Missouri Tiger. Speaking to cohost West Wilson, Cunningham agreed with the contention that Porter was taken out of context -- and his main point is fairly straightforward.
"If you are a professional football player, basketball player, really any sport... If you're in that elite level group, yeah, you should be able to beat the girls," Cunningham said. "I'm not surprised by that. I just don't get why it's continuing to get brought up."
Cunningham thinks that by the time future NBA players are in eighth grade, they are already well on their way to developing pro-ready bodies and skillsets. She suspects that Porter is right from the standpoint of a pro player could beat a high school girls' player -- and as the players age, the advantages for males remain clear, even if female players can "outshoot" or "pass the s*** out of" the ball.
"If women are saying, 'He couldn't beat them,' yeah, he could. Any NBA star could beat a female in high school.... I don't want to be unrealistic or delusional," Cunningham said. "Like, men are just stronger, bigger, athletic. They just are a different build. So if you put them up against females, yeah, they're gonna win."
