Caitlin Clark’s sophomore WNBA season is officially over. The Indiana Fever guard announced Thursday night that she won’t return this year, ending months of speculation about whether she could fight her way back before the playoffs.

Clark’s injury-plagued year comes to a close

Clark has been sidelined since mid-July after a groin injury in the final seconds of a win against Connecticut. She also dealt with nagging quad and ankle issues that never fully healed. Despite hours of rehab and limited on-court work, the former No. 1 pick admitted time had run out.

“I had hoped to share a better update, but I will not be returning to play this season,” Clark posted on social media. “Disappointed isn’t a big enough word.”

Second season in the league

Her second year was defined more by injuries than highlights. Clark averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5 rebounds across 13 games, but never played more than five in a row. It was a sharp contrast to her rookie campaign, when she earned All-WNBA honors and nearly cracked the MVP top three.

Indiana is still chasing a playoff spot, locked in a tight battle with Golden State, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Losing Clark for good leaves the Fever short-handed, especially with four other players already ruled out for the year.

The Fever’s front office stressed that her long-term health was the priority. Clark is expected to be fully cleared for the 2026 season, but her absence down the stretch changes the entire outlook for Indiana’s postseason push.
