Alex Honnold has built a life defined by precision and an unusual sense of calm — qualities that extend well beyond the cliff faces that made him famous.

Honnold is best known for his 2017 free solo of Yosemite’s El Capitan, a 3,000-foot rock face he climbed alone and without ropes, a feat immortalized in the Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo. The ascent made him a global figure, landing him on the cover of National Geographic and into mainstream outlets such as CBS' 60 Minutes and The New York Times.

This week, Honnold is again pushing boundaries with a live, Netflix-documented free solo attempt of Taipei 101, bringing the intensity of free soloing into an urban setting and broadcasting it to a global audience.

Honnold being back in the spotlight has fans interested in his personal life, such as where he lives.

Where does Alex Honnold live?

The 40-year-old free-solo climbing legend lives in Las Vegas with his wife, Sanni, and their two daughters, June and Alice.

While Las Vegas may seem an unexpected home base, the city’s proximity to Red Rock Canyon and year-round climbing conditions make it a practical hub for one of the world’s most accomplished climbers.

Honnold was born in 1985 and raised in Sacramento, California, the son of two community college teachers. He began climbing at age 5 in local gyms and was training almost daily by the time he was 11. That early consistency laid the foundation for a career defined by preparation, according to his bio.

Before settling in Nevada, Honnold spent nearly a decade living out of a famously small camper van, allowing him to stay close to climbing destinations while keeping his life intentionally simple. Even today, his Las Vegas home reflects that mindset. To stay sharp during colder months, he maintains a custom-built climbing gym in his garage, a space designed for efficiency.

Beyond climbing, Honnold founded the Honnold Foundation, which focuses on environmental sustainability and expanding access to solar energy worldwide.
