US Open 2020: Which Canadians are playing, schedule, how to watch in Canada image

The 2020 U.S. Open is on.

Almost eight months after tennis' last Grand Slam event took place, some of the best and brightest of the sport will hit the hard courts in Flushing Meadows.

North America's lone Grand Slam tournament is set to begin Aug. 31, and seven Canadians will compete in New York City to capture titles in one of tennis' premier events.

Here's everything you need to know about how to watch the Canadians competing in the 2020 U.S. Open.

Which Canadian players are in the 2020 US Open?

Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil will compete in men's singles while Leylah Annie Fernandez will compete in the women's bracket.

In women's doubles, Gaby Dabrowski is teaming up with the United States' Alison Riske and Sharon FIchman will be playing with Croatia's Darija Jurak. Shapovalov will also be competing in men's doubles with India's Rohan Bopanna.

Ranked 17th in the world and seeded 12th in the tournament, Shapovalov is the highest-ranked Canadian in singles and, unlike the last two years in New York City, will not be playing countryman Auger-Aliassime in the first round. The two are on opposite sides of the bracket this year, with the Montreal, Que., native seeded 15th and in the same side of the bracket as Raonic (25th seed) and Pospisil.

Fernandez, competing in just her second grand slam event, will face Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the first round. She has three wins this year against players in the Top 50.

Why is Bianca Andreescu not playing in US Open 2020?

Andreescu, Canada's top-ranked player, withdrew from the tournament in mid-August, saying on social media that "unforeseen challenges, including the Covid [sic] pandemic, have compromised my ability to prepare and compete to the degree necessary to play at my highest level."

Her coach revealed on Sept. 7 to CTV News Montreal that she was not playing this year due to injury.

The 20-year-old defending women's singles champion — and the first Canadian to win a major singles title — has not played a competitive match since injuring her knee in October 2019 at the WTA Finals.
