French Open 2022 qualifying results and wild cards: Who will compete at Roland-Garros? image

The 2022 French Open is just around the corner with all eyes now on who will be competing at Roland-Garros.

A total of 128 men and women will be vying for singles' titles with Novak Djokovic and Barbora Krejcikova looking to defend their crowns.

While the path to the French Open is simple for some players, it's not so straightforward for others.

How does French Open qualifying work?

The 104 highest-ranked men and women that sign up for the French Open automatically qualify for the Grand Slam.

Players can also qualify based on the protected ranking system which ensures a previous high-placing is honoured even if a player drops as a result of injury or inactivity. For example, Stan Wawrinka will compete in 2022 using this method despite seeing his ranking drop to No. 246 at the start of May.

For those without a good enough ranking or protected ranking, the next best players wanting to compete at the event are placed into qualifying rounds with 16 spots up for grabs.

Players are put in 16 groups of eight with whoever wins three straight games in their section securing their place at the French Open. Sometimes finalists, known as 'lucky losers', are also given a qualifying spot.

After all that, eight further players are then gifted a place at the French Open as wild cards.

These wild cards are selected at the discretion of the tournament organisers with local players and returning big names who have failed to qualify directly often selected.

In 2021, seven out of eight French Open wild cards for both the men's and women's singles draws were players from France.

When is French Open qualifying?

French Open qualifying in 2022 begins on May 16 and will conclude four days later on May 20.

The French Open officially begins on May 22 giving qualifiers a short turnaround to prepare for the Grand Slam once they book their spot.

Has a qualifier ever won a Grand Slam?

Emma Raducanu became the first qualifier in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title when she triumphed at the US Open in 2021.

The British teenager remarkably didn't drop a set during qualifying or in the tournament to show qualifiers are capable of causing an upset at Grand Slams.

At the French Open in 2021, no qualifier made it to the fourth round but both Carlos Alcaraz and Henri Laaksonen made it to the third round in the men's singles.
