What time does the transfer window close? Deadline day for Premier League, major leagues in September 2025 image

The 2025 summer transfer window has seen a flurry of activity all across Europe, as clubs from the top down look to make alterations to their squads to position themselves for the start of the 2025/26 season.

As is often the case, Premier League clubs have wielded the most financial might, but many top sides around the continent have splashed the cash in the hopes of improving their fortunes in the coming campaign.

With league play set to begin in mid-August, including the English top flight, which begins on August 15, the start of the season is fast approaching. Despite annual calls to sync up the end of the transfer window and the start of competitive fixtures, that has not yet come to pass — instead, there is still a crossover of a few weeks to navigate.

The Sporting News brings you an overview of when the summer transfer window will officially close, as there's a slight new tweak to the schedule for many top European leagues this year.

What time does the transfer window close?

The top European leagues have come together to set a concurrent end point to the 2025 summer transfer window. Thus, the window will close on Monday, September 1 at 7 p.m. BST (2 p.m. ET) for all five of the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.

Most European leagues see their transfer window close sometime around the end of August each summer. While in the past, the specific moment varies slightly from country to country, that has changed this year.

Often, the window closes on August 31, but as that day falls on a Sunday this year, organisers have altered their schedule slightly.

La Liga had to make the biggest change, as they moved their window up four hours, previously closing the signing period at midnight local time in Spain. The Bundesliga moved their regular time back two hours to accommodate the collective, while Ligue 1 moved theirs back three hours.

Championship (England)

Interestingly, while the Premier League and other top European leagues close their summer window on September 1, the EFL has decided that the lower leagues in England will finish up their business slightly earlier.

With the regular date of August 31 falling on a Sunday, instead of pushing the date back a day to the next Monday, the EFL will shut the 2025 summer window the previous Friday, August 29 at 11 p.m. BST.

MLS summer transfer window

Major League Soccer in the United States has reportedly discussed moving to the European competitive calendar, but for now they still feature the common North American and South American calendar-year schedule.

Thus, their summer transfer window, which falls in the middle of the 2025 season, differs from the European model.

The 2025 MLS summer transfer window opened on July 24 and will close on Wednesday, August 21. No specific time was specified by the publicly available league regulations.

Saudi Pro League

Looking to accommodate any potential links with European players, which has been a strategy of the league in recent years, the Saudi Pro League will shut its summer transfer window on Tuesday, September 2.

This allows Saudi clubs hoping to close late deals for wantaway players more time to seal a move, hoping to capitalise on the panic that sometimes comes with the end of the registration period.

Often, European clubs can prioritise incoming deals in the final moments of the window, leaving those hoping to leave by the wayside. Adding an extra day allows Saudi clubs time to negotiate with clubs who can then focus all their attention on any remaining departures that failed to materialise earlier.

When does the 2026 winter transfer window open?

There have not been formal announcements on the 2026 January transfer window from most European leagues just yet, but some have already confirmed the calendar.

Most notably, the Italian top flight announced the Serie A winter window will open on January 2 and will close on February 2, 2026. Most European leagues will likely follow suit.

Like the summer window, the usual closing date of January 31 also falls on a weekend — this time a Saturday — so the window will likely shut on the following Monday.
