EFL Trophy champions of 2005 Wrexham return to ation in the tournament for the first time in 16 years when they begin their campaign at home to Premier League side Newcastle United's under-21 and reserve team on Tuesday.

Under the competition rules, which are aimed at developing players, invited participants Newcastle must included at least six players who were under the age of 21 at the end of June, and only two who were over the age of 21 and had made 40 or more appearances at senior level at that time.

Wrexham, meanwhile, must field at least four players who meet various experience criteria, including starting their previous or following games or making more than 40 first-team starting appearances in their career.

Both teams will play three matches in the group stage of the competition, with the top two teams in their four-team group reaching the knockout rounds.
