JUMP TO:

The United States men will face their toughest test since the conclusion of last summer's Copa America as they contest a friendly against 15th-ranked Uruguay on Tuesday evening from Tampa.

In the final match of the 2025 calendar year, Mauricio Pochettino will meet his old manager and mentor Marcelo Bielsa, who he called "the greatest coach in the world."

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup draws nearer, the chances for the United States to prepare for the competition dwindle. At the conclusion of this game, there will be just one more international window in March before the Pochettino will be forced to make his decisions on who will join the team for next summer's critical tournament.

Following a 2-1 win over Paraguay on the weekend, the U.S. Will again be without a number of stars, including Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Chris Richards for this match as they all recover from slight fitness issues or remain with their clubs for various other reasons.

USA vs. Uruguay live updates, highlights from friendly

77th min: Folarin Balogun is shown a yellow card for a flailing elbow into the head of a Uruguay player, who needs treatment on the bridge of his nose.

72nd min: Gio Reyna is the first U.S. Player booked as he drags back Nahitan Nandez in midfield to prevent a counter.

John Tolkin is down receiving treatment after falling backwards into the legs of an opponent. He'll be replaced by Max Arfsten, while Brenden Aaronson comes on for Timothy Tillman.

68th min: GOAL! USA! TANNER TESSMANN MAKES IT FIVE, JUST HAVING COME OFF THE BENCH! Another first international goal!

It's a delicious ball into the penalty area by Gio Reyna, and Tessmann delivers a pinpoint header from the top of the six-yard box, with the goalkeeper throwing himself at it and coming nowhere close. Too easy for the U.S. Who are absolutely soaring!

64th min: RED CARD! URUGUAY! RODRIGO BENTANCUR IS SENT OFF! It's fully deserved, as he goes studs-up OVER the top of the ball and into the shins of Sebastian Berhalter! It's a blatant straight red, as his foot goes completely over the ball without touching it, and catches Berhalter straight in the lower leg.

Uruguay are three goals down and now down a man as well! They'll make an immediate change, as Giorgian De Arrascaeta is sacrificed with Emiliano Martinez brought into midfield. It's a shame for the Flamengo No. 10, as he was maybe Uruguay's only strong performer to this point.

63rd min: OUCH. Nahitan Nandez has his hand stepped on in an awkward moment of play, and is in a ton of pain. He receives treatment and may be about to come off shortly.

61st min: Right on the stroke of the hour mark, there are three U.S. Changes from Mauricio Pochettino. Gio Reyna, Folarin Balogun, and Tanner Tessmann all enter the match. Out goes Sergino Dest, Diego Luna, and Haji Wright.

57th min: Chance, Uruguay! Giorgian De Arrascaeta nearly bags another goal, as he rips one at Matt Freese's near post, but the U.S. Goalkeeper is up to the task, getting across to prevent the effort from reaching the back of the net! That's a very solid stop on a ball with a lot of pace.

50th min: John Tolkin is crunched by an awful, studs-up challenge from Rodrigo Bentancur who slips and slides right into Tolkin, stepping right on the U.S. Full-back's foot. Definitely not intentional, but still surprising for Bentancur to escape that unharmed.

Moments earlier, Sergino Dest did a rabona in the attacking third trying to deliver a ball for a teammate. This USMNT squad is feeling audacious right now.

Rodrigo Bentancur is booked for a foul on Diego Luna, the first yellow card of the match for either team.

2nd half kickoff: The game is back under way with the U.S. In complete control after a strong first half.

Mauricio Pochettino, who makes no halftime changes, tells the TNT broadcast that he was thrilled with the first half, but stresses that his side needs to "control our emotions" to keep calm and perform for the final 45 minutes.

There are three changes for Marcelo Bielsa, as he withdraws Federico Vinas and Matias Vina. In are Rodrigo Aguirre, and Joaquin Piquerez respectively.

HALFTIME: USA 4-1 Uruguay

What a wild first 45 minutes! It was almost all one-way traffic, as the United States skewered a very quality Uruguay side for nearly the entire first half.

Alex Freeman has a brace, while Sebastian Berhalter has a goal and an assist. Diego Luna rounded out the scoring, as all four goals have come from MLS players.

Mauricio Pochettino won't be happy about the levels which dropped just before the break, allowing Uruguay to grab one back in stoppage time, but overall he must be thrilled with how that first half went.

45+1 min: GOAL! URUGUAY! Finally Giorgian De Arrascaeta and the South Americans are on the board!

There's a big scare for the U.S. As a bad giveaway in their own third nearly gifts Uruguay a goal, but it's cleared by Alex Freeman. Uruguay don't give up though, as on the recycle, De Arrascaeta takes a ball out of the air with a STUNNING bicycle kick!!!

44th min: Chance, Uruguay! Giorgian De Arrascaeta misses a big chance! Uruguay play quickly off a free-kick and go right through the middle, but when De Arrascaeta gets the ball at pace on the penalty spot, he tries to toe-poke it to the far post, and it goes wide!

42nd min: GOAL! USA! DIEGO LUNA PUTS THE U.S. UP BY FOUR! The U.S. Is running riot!!!!!

The U.S. Attacks down the left again, and a deflected cutback by Freeman falls perfectly for a charging Luna who is completely unmarked trailing the play! There are two Uruguay defenders marking nobody, and neither had any idea that the Moonman was approaching!

30th min: GOAL! USA! ALEX FREEMAN HAS ANOTHER! THIS IS INCREDIBLE! A DAZZLING GOAL!

The initial delivery is cleared, but the U.S. Recycles it down the left flank, and after a crunching tackle by Timothy Tillman that the referee allows to play on, Aidan Morris gives it to Freeman who weaves through no less than three Uruguay defenders, including Barcelona star Ronald Araujo, and finishes once one-on-one with the goalkeeper! What a delicious move!

28th min: Chance, Uruguay! The South Americans have begun to turn the screw now that they're 2-0 down, and they strike the crossbar!!!

Off a corner, a thunderous shot from De Arrascaeta clangs the woodwork, so close to a response!!

25th min: Chance, USA! Diego Luna is blocked off and goes down in the penalty area, and looks to the referee who refuses to blow his whistle. Incredibly, the Uruguay players all seem to drop their guard as they seemingly expect the whistle to be blown, but the U.S. Keeps playing, and a shot from Aidan Morris is saved extremely well by Christopher Fiermarin! The goal was gaping there!

20th min: GOAL! USA! ANOTHER SET-PIECE GOAL FOR THE UNITED STATES! A thumping corner is delivered to the far post, and Alex Freeman heads it angrily into the back of the net.

First Berhalter logs his first USMNT goal, and then he assists Freeman's first-ever strike!

17th min: GOAL! USA!  SEBASTIAN BERHALTER DELIVERS THE FREE-KICK PERFECTLY INTO THE TOP-RIGHT CORNER FOR HIS FIRST INTERNATIONAL GOAL!

Berhalter taps the dead ball to to his right for Sergino Dest, and the PSV full-back feeds it right back to Berhalter in a better position near the top corner of the penalty area, for the Vancouver Whitecaps man to strike it into the to-right corner!

15th min: Manuel Ugarte puts in a THUMPING challenge on Haji Wright just outside the edge of the penalty area, earning the U.S. A dangerous free-kick. Somehow, he gets away without a yellow card, which upsets Mauricio Pochettino.

Sebastian Berhalter stands over the dead ball, and the U.S. Takes the free-kick, but the referee wants to stop play and chat with Ugarte, chastising him for bear-hug tackling Alex Freeman.

13th min: Not shockingly, this has been a very physical game so far. Nahitan Nandez leaves a foot in on Aidan Morris to win the U.S. A foul out wide. Both teams have been aggressive out of possession so far.

8th min: The U.S. Has controlled the opening stage of the match, as they have pressed Uruguay effectively and maintained the majority of possession. They haven't created any chances on goal just yet, but they have come close. Haji Wright received the ball at the top of the penalty area with his back to goal, but when he turned to shoot his effort was blocked right at his feet.

Kickoff: They're under way at the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! The final match of the 2025 calendar year is now under way.

Mauricio Pochettino has rotated his side heavily, and against one of the toughest opponents the USMNT has faced under the current head coach. Can they push for an improbable victory against the side that knocked them out of the 2024 Copa America?

USA vs. Uruguay: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Marcelo Bielsa, one of the most influential coaches in world football, has an interesting warmup technique for his Uruguay side as this match closes in!

30 mins to kickoff: With so many changes to the USMNT lineup, it was difficult for Mauricio Pochettino to hand out the captain's armband. Tim Ream has been the one to wear it the most under Pochettino, but he now hands it off to Mark McKenzie tonight, who captains the side for the first time in his career.

Tonight is his eighth appearance of 2025, the most he's ever worn the U.S. Shirt in a single calendar year.

45 mins to kickoff: Matt Freese is one of the two roster holdovers for Mauricio Pochettino tonight from the Paraguay victory. Freese is in the lineup for the 13th time this calendar year, equaling the record for the most caps by a single USMNT goalkeeper in a year with the 13 that Matt Turner logged in 2021.

Pochettino said in October that there was the chance for another goalkeeper to play in November, but Freese maintained his position.

It's pretty clear who the current No. 1 is going into a World Cup year.

1 hour to kickoff: Uruguay have also released their lineup. While they are missing a number of first-team regulars like the hosts, a familiar face comes into the XI as Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo returns after not appearing against Mexico.

Facundo Torres and Fernando Pellistri will have to wait their turn, however, as they do not appear in the lineup for the second straight match, settling for a place on the bench.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: The USMNT lineup is in, and there are a number of new faces in the XI! Mauricio Pochettino has rotated heavily for this match, making NINE changes to the squad that was rolled out to face Paraguay. Like Joe Scally did against Paraguay, Alex Freeman will move from his natural full-back position to play center-back.

It's such a heavily rotated lineup that it's hard to see how it can come away with a victory against such a strong opponent.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Another position battle is taking place at center-back, where Chris Richards is not on the roster for the USMNT this month.

Joe Scally and Miles Robinson were given a chance to impress last time out, with Scally holding his own and Robinson looking shaky. Will we get to see Auston Trusty or Mark McKenzie tonight?

1 hour 45 mins to kick: There are still a number of spots up for grabs within the USMNT squad as the World Cup approaches.

With Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie both not in the squad, there are battles to be had in midfield. Tanner Tessmann seems to have locked down a role behind those two, and Cristian Roldan has shot himself back into contention.

That leaves the likes of Sebastian Berhalter, Gio Reyna, and Aidan Morris as the guys on this roster who have work to do if they wish to push for a spot at next summer's tournament. Will they get a look tonight?

2 hours to kickoff: Since being hired as USMNT head coach, Mauricio Pochettino has tried to force the idea that every single game is of the utmost importance. That was on display again before the Uruguay match as he fielded a very simple question and turned it into an emotional rant about the USMNT leadership needing to display passion so it trickles down through the squad.

While sometimes there can be conflicting messages regarding the importance of friendlies, particularly with his call-ups, Pochettino has been quite consistent with his press conferences in how passionate his players should feel about taking the field for their country.
