Real Madrid legend Marcelo has become the 14th player to win both the Champions League and Copa Libertadores after winning South America's premier club competition with Fluminense at the Maracana.

The Brazilian left-back joined the illustrious group of players to win both competitions as Brazil's Fluminense secured a 2-1 win against Argentina's Boca Juniors in the Libertadores final.

The Sporting News looks at the select few who have won both of these trophies in their playing careers — a group of players that Marcelo has now joined.

Which players have won the Copa Libertadores and UEFA Champions League?

A total of fourteen players have won both the Copa Libertadores and the UEFA Champions League. They are all from one of two countries: Argentina, and Brazil.

The first to achieve it was Juan Pablo Sorin. In 1995-96, he played a handful of games for Juventus, who won the Champions League that season after defeating Ajax on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the final in Rome. However, due to his struggle for regular game time under Marcelo Lippi, Sorin moved to River Plate midway through the campaign and enjoyed immediate success, winning the Libertadores on June 26, 1996 — just 35 days after officially becoming a European champion.

The names that followed him on that list are among some of the most famous in modern football: Dida, Cafu. Roque Junior, Carlos Tevez, Walter Samuel, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Danilo, Rafinha, Ramires, David Luiz, Julian Alvarez and most recently former Real Madrid legend Marcelo.

It is also worth mentioning Wilfredo Caballero, who was part of the Boca squad in 2003 and Chelsea in the 2020/21 season, although he did not play any minutes in either the Libertadores or the Champions League. As such, UEFA does not consider him a European champion.

Fluminense left-back Marcelo won five Champions Leagues during a glittering 15-year career with Real Madrid and already has a winner's medal this year for the Campeonato Carioca. He was the latest Brazilian to join this esteemed list after Fluminense's Libertadores win.
