Pep Guardiola finals record all-time: Manager's history in title matches ahead of Champions League final image

The 2022/23 Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan is filled with subplots as Pep Guardiola prepares to take centre stage in Istanbul.

Guardiola has dominated the Premier League since his arrival in Manchester in 2016, but his lack of a Champions League trophy with City, remains a glaring omission.

City lost out to Chelsea in their first ever Champions League final, in 2021, with Guardiola later admitting he got his tactics and team selection wrong against Thomas Tuchel's side.

However, City and Guardiola are now presented with another final, up against an Inter side through to the UEFA showpiece match for the first time since winning the Champions League in 2010.

Barcelona (11 finals)

  • 2009 Copa del Rey final: Athletic Club 1-4 Barcelona
  • 2009 Champions League final: Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United
  • 2009 Supercopa de Espana final: Athletic Club 1-5 Barcelona
  • 2009 UEFA Super Cup final: Barcelona 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
  • 2009 FIFA Club World Cup final: Estudiantes 1-2 Barcelona
  • 2010 Copa del Rey final: Sevilla 3-5 Barcelona
  • 2011 Supercopa de Espana final: Real Madrid 4-5 Barcelona
  • 2011 Champions League final: Barcelona 3-1 Manchester United
  • 2011 UEFA Super Cup final: Barcelona 2-0 Porto
  • 2011 FIFA Club World Cup final: Santos 0-4 Barcelona
  • 2012 Copa del Rey final: Athletic Club 0-3 Barcelona

Guardiola's time at Barcelona included the most dominant period in the club's history, as part of an incredible four-year run, from 2008 to 2012.

During his stint at the Camp Nou, Guardiola boasted an incredible record of 11 wins from 11 finals, across domestic cups and UEFA and FIFA tournaments.

However, the pick of Guardiola's final triumphs at Barcelona came in his two Champions League showdown victories over Manchester United, in 2009 and 2011.

Lionel Messi's memorable looping header secured a 2-0 win for Barca in Rome in their first meeting, but despite some United optimism of revenge at Wembley in 2011, Messi inspired Guardiola's charges to a superb 3-0 win.

Bayern Munich (4 finals)

  • 2018 UEFA Super Cup final: Bayern 2-2 Chelsea (Bayern 4-3 on pens)
  • 2014 FIFA Club World Cup final: Bayern 2-0 Raja Casblanca
  • 2014 DFB-Pokal Cup final: B. Dortmund 0-2 Bayern
  • 2016 DFB-Pokal Cup final: Bayern 0-0 B. Dortmund (Bayern 5-4 on pens)

Guardiola's Bayern Munich career only featured four final appearances, as he failed to reach the Champions League final, on the back of Jupp Heynckes winning it the season before his arrival.

His cup success brought him into direct competition with Jurgen Klopp and Tuchel, and his Bayern side gritted out DFB-Pokal wins over both managers.

Man City (11 finals)

  • 2018 EFL Cup final: Arsenal 0-3 Man City
  • 2018 Community Shield final: Chelsea 0-2 Man City
  • 2019 EFL Cup final: Chelsea 0-0 Man City (Man City 4-3 on pens)
  • 2019 FA Cup final: Man City 6-0 Watford
  • 2020 Community Shield final: Liverpool 1 Man City 1 (Man City 5-4 on pens)
  • 2020 EFL Cup final: Aston Villa 1-2 Man City
  • 2021 Community Shield final: Leicester City 1-0 Man City
  • 2021 EFL Cup final: Man City 1-0 Tottenham
  • 2021 Champions League final: Man City 0-1 Chelsea
  • 2023 Community Shield final: Liverpool 3-1 Man City
  • 2023 FA Cup final: Man City 2-1 Man United

Guardiola has taken the domestic cup competitions very seriously during his time in England, with a domestic Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup treble in 2018/19 his biggest one-season haul so far.

Four League Cups and two FA Cups from six finals gives him a 100 percent record in major domestic cup competitions, with Community Shield losses to Leicester City and Liverpool the only domestic outliers.

The most glaring negative mark against Guardiola, and his overall career finals record was defeat to Tuchel's Chelsea in 2021, as Kai Havertz scored to block City's Champions League dream.

How many finals has Pep Guardiola lost?

Guardiola has only lost three of the 26 finals he has managed, with all three coming at City, and only one of them in a major final.

  • 2021 Champions League
  • 2021 Community Shield
  • 2023 Community Shield

Alongside the challenge of ending City's wait for a Champions League title, Guardiola's appearance on the bench at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium will bring him up to 12 finals with City, more than at Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

2021 Champions League

  • Manchester City 0-1 Chelsea

Guardiola's first final defeat came on the biggest stage of all as he fell at the final Champions League hurdle against Chelsea in Porto. His call to leave Rodri out of his starting XI was heavily criticised in the aftermath, as more rumours of 'overthinking' emerged.

However, despite the frustration for Guardiola, the final result was a superb coup for Tuchel, as part of his brilliant start at Chelsea, and the hangover has continued for City.

2021 Community Shield

  • Leicester City 1-0 Manchester City

Guardiola's first domestic 'final' loss came in the 2021 Community Shield, as former City striker Kelechi Iheanacho scored from the penalty spot, in the annual season curtain raiser.

2023 Community Shield

  • Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City

Guardiola lost in the Community Shield again in 2023, but due to the lack of competitiveness associated with the fixture, he is unlikely to be too troubled, as Darwin Nunez netted his first Liverpool goal with a late winner.

Guardiola has won 34 trophies throughout his career and he is aiming for No.35 against Inter.
