From John Obi Mikel to Nwankwo Kanu to Jay-Jay Okocha, Nigerian footballers have a long and storied history in the English top flight.
Soon, one name will eclipse the rest for Premier League longevity and service, as Alex Iwobi is on the cusp of setting the record for most league appearances by a player from the African nation.
The 29-year-old has spent his entire senior professional career in the Premier League, coming through the Arsenal academy before enjoying stints at Everton and Fulham.
The Sporting News details how Iwobi, whose maternal uncle is former Bolton star Okocha, became a fixture of the world's biggest football league.

Alex Iwobi career
Iwobi was born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1996, and following a brief stay in Turkey, he moved with his family to England at the age of four, settling in London.
In 2004, Iwobi joined the Arsenal academy, rising all the way to become a full senior professional for the club. He made his debut in 2015 as a 19-year-old and would stay for four seasons, eclipsing the century mark of league appearances for the Gunners.
Eventually, after failing to establish himself as a regular in the starting lineup, Iwobi moved to Everton for a reported initial fee of £28 million ($35.8m). He would move from a winger to a box-to-box midfield role, scoring six goals in 123 Premier League appearances for the Toffees.
With his five-year contract down to just one year left, he would leave in a reported £22m ($26.8m) deal to join Fulham in 2023, where he would blossom into the best version of himself as a free-ranging No. 10, playing both out wide and in the middle of the pitch. Having scored 17 league goals across 223 league appearances before moving to Craven Cottage, Iwobi has bagged 15 goals for Fulham in just 75 league games as of his 298th league match.
Iwobi appeared for England through his youth international career but switched to represent Nigeria as a senior international, making his debut in 2015 off the bench in a friendly against DR Congo, and scoring his first goal against Zambia in a World Cup qualifier in October of 2016. As of October of 2025, Iwobi has logged 87 career appearances for his country of birth, scoring 10 goals.

John Obi Mikel was also twice a Premier League champion. He won two league titles with Chelsea, the first under Carlo Ancelotti in 2009/10, and the second with Jose Mourinho in 2014/15.
Victor Moses was also a champion with Chelsea, playing a pivotal role for Antonio Conte in 2016/17.
