Are Marcus and Khephren Thuram brothers? Inter and Juventus stars both score in Derby d'Italia image

The Derby d'Italia is one of the biggest rivalries not just in Italian football but all of Europe, as giants Juventus and Inter Milan often provide fireworks and drama each time they clash on the pitch.

That fact was on full display as Juve won a thrilling 4-3 victory at home over their biggest rivals on Saturday, with substitute Vasilije Adzic scoring a stunning winner in stoppage time to give the hosts an early three points in Turin.

Playing a big role for both sides were two individuals with similar names, as Marcus Thuram of Inter and Khephren Thuram-Ulien of Juventus both found the back of the net in the match.

The Sporting News explains the familial connection between both French players and how deep their ties to Italian football run.

Are Marcus and Khephren Thuram brothers?

Marcus Thuram, who plays for Inter Milan, and Khephren Thuram are indeed brothers, with the 28-year-old Marcus four years older than his younger brother Khephren.

Both players were born in Italy while their father was playing in Serie A.

They began their careers at small local French clubs Olympique de Neuilly and Boulogne-Billancourt, before going their separate ways. Marcus joined Sochaux in 2012 and would make his professional debut for the club three years later, while Khephren went to AS Monaco and then Nice where he would make his professional debut in 2019.

The two brothers have both made international appearances for France, although in difference capacities. Marcus has become a regular under Didier Deschamps, earning 31 appearances and scoring two goals, while Khephren has just one senior international appearance.

Who is Marcus Thuram's father?

Both Marcus and Khephren are sons of Lillian Thuram, a former French international and legendary defender.

Lillian made over 100 appearances for Monaco, Parma, and Juventus before finishing his career at Barcelona.

Born in French territory Guadeloupe, Lillian also made 142 international appearances for France, winning a World Cup title in 1998 plus a European Championship two years later.

The Thuram brothers were born in Parma, Italy while his father was playing for the club.

Why didn't Marcus Thuram celebrate his goal vs. Juventus?

It's unclear why Marcus Thuram didn't celebrate his goal against Juventus, having given his side a 3-2 lead in the 76th minute with a fantastic header.

Most likely, Thuram has significant respect for Juventus given his father's legendary time at the club.

The goal was Marcus's first against Juventus in his fifth appearance.

In contrast, his brother Khephren was happy to celebrate his goal which came seven minutes later and leveled the score at 3-3 and set up his side's eventual 4-3 victory. It was also his first goal against derby rivals Inter.
