A wet and wacky 90 minutes at Old Trafford has provided Manchester United a springboard away from their tough start to the Premier League season as they defeat Chelsea 2-1 behind goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.
In the pouring Manchester rain, the Red Devils capitalised on a fourth minute red card to Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez who cleaned out Bryan Mbeumo on the counter to leave the Blues down a man nearly the entire match.
Fernandes would take advantage soon after, delivering United a lead 10 minutes later for his 100th Manchester United goal. They would double the advantage on 37 minutes as Casemiro headed home after a mental error from Chelsea’s replacement goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
However, the Brazilian would soon find himself with an early shower as he collected a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time, evening the numbers at 10-on-10.
With the precipitation unrelenting, the second half was largely eventful, even as both managers made a meal of seemingly simple things like substitutions. It felt storybook that former United star Alejandro Garnacho would come on to help Chelsea back in it, but he was denied the chance by Enzo Maresca, while Ruben Amorim made last-minute changes and surprised by bringing captain Bruno Fernandes off late with the game in the balance.
Yet there would be more action in store for the rain-soaked crowd at the Theatre of Dreams, as Trevoh Chalobah brought Chelsea a goal back with 10 minutes to go. It wouldn’t be enough in the end, however, as United held on for a vital three points, leaving the Blues without a Premier League win at Old Trafford since 2013 and giving Amorim a huge win to relieve the growing pressure temporarily.

Man United vs. Chelsea live updates, highlights from Premier League
FULLTIME: Man United 2-1 Chelsea
THE RED DEVILS HANG ON! Manchester United secure a massive three points against a top Premier League club, holding on for dear life to win in the pouring rain. What a game that was! Thoroughly entertaining, especially from the comforts of the living room couch watching the events unfold in the terrible weather.
Chelsea were ultimately done in by their early red card and the poor subsequent response.
90+6 min: Chelsea are trying their best to get back in this one, but United have fought hard. As the Red Devils break off a failed Chelsea attack, Tosin Adarabioyo is booked for a late, chance-halting tackle.
88th min: Ruben Amorim makes his final change, withdrawing...Bruno Fernandes???? How does that make any sense? With the game hanging in the balance, he brings his captain off, as Kobbie Mainoo joins the fray.
Seven minutes of stoppage time are shown!
84th min: Chance, Man United! Filip Jorgensen dives to save a Bruno Fernandes effort! The United captain took aim from outside the top of the penalty area, a wonderful strike low to the goalkeeper's right, but Jorgensen does well to go full stretch and parry the ball!
80th min: GOAL! CHELSEA!!! TREVOH CHALOBAH HEADS HOME A GOAL TO BRING CHELSEA ONE BACK! GAME ON!!!
Reece James delivers a wonderful cross to the penalty area and Lenny Yoro loses track of the ball, allowing Chalobah to rifle a header inside the far post!

72nd min: Tyrique George is booked for a foul on United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir as he comes sliding in very late trying to block a long ball from the back. Deserved.
64th min: What is happening? Both managers are waffling making substitutions.
First, it appeared Alejandro Garnacho is coming on to face his former club, as he was speaking to the Chelsea assistants for no less than five minutes readying to enter. Then....Enzo Maresca has apparently changed his mind. Garnacho is sat back down, and it will be Tyrique George and Malo Gusto to come on to replace Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella.
Then, Ruben Amorim appears to bring Matheus Cunha on for his return from injury to replace Bryan Mbeumo, and then has a freakout on the touchline. He instead withdraws Noussair Mazraoui, going ballistic on the touchline to make sure he sees his change applied correctly. A few minutes later, Mason Mount and Lenny Yoro are brought on, with Mbeumo indeed yanked alongside Harry Maguire.
63rd min: Chance, Chelsea! Wesley Fofana has the ball in the back of the net on a corner, but the flag is up for offside! He's standing right in front of the goalkeeper on the initial flick, and the referee gets this one spot on.
58th min: Joao Pedro seems to have a breakaway but Luke Shaw makes a vital intervention to prevent the play. Chelsea appear to be readying some substitutions...
50th min: There's another booking for Trevoh Chalobah, who comes clattering in very late and heavy on Amad Diallo. Andrey Santos points to his head and tells Chalobah to be smart now on a yellow the rest of the way.
48th min: Enzo Fernandez goes into the referee's book for an...admittedly tame challenge. Peter Bankes may be trying to get a hold of this game by tightening the leash on fouling.
46th min: The ball is not rolling as it normally would, as it was pouring at halftime creating some pools of standing water on the Old Trafford pitch. For example, Ruben Amorim is being allowed to stand outside his technical area because the area itself is one giant puddle.
There's also some needle in this one right away, as a foul in midfield sees Harry Maguire run away holding the ball, which angers Moises Caicedo and the Chelsea squad who want to get on with it. There could be even more incident in this game...
2nd half kickoff: They're back under way in the Old Trafford rain, as Man United have made a change, with Benjamin Sesko, who had just eight total touches in that first half, coming off and replaced by Manuel Ugarte.
HALFTIME: Man United 2-0 Chelsea
What a wild first 45 minutes! With Robert Sanchez sent off just four minutes in, Man United were dominant through nearly the entire half, scoring twice and snuffing Chelsea out with the man advantage. However, Casemiro's dismissal right before the break — a very silly thing to do, given the player's experience — has wiped away the man advantage and given Chelsea hope.
Alejandro Garnacho has been the target of chanting all half from the United fans, will he come on and make them pay? What a story that would be!

45+5 min: RED CARD, MAN UNITED! THE ONE THING MAN UNITED COULDN'T HAVE HAPPEN, HAS HAPPENED!!!!! CASEMIRO IS SENT OFF FOR A SECOND YELLOW CARD! GAME ON???
The United midfielder was already booked earlier in the half, and has now received another caution as he wrestles down an opponent as Chelsea broke through midfield! It's a bit of a harsh second yellow, but entirely understandable at the same time, as he was all over Andrey Santos from behind before swinging his legs around and bringing his fellow Brazilian down!
Suddenly, Chelsea have hope!

44th min: Marc Cucurella is booked for a very dangerous tackle on Noussair Mazraoui, as he goes in two footed near the touchline. Cucurella is furious, having to be held back by a teammate, but it's a very fair booking. Not sure what he's so upset about.
There are NINE minutes of stoppage time shown.
37th min: GOAL! MAN UNITED!!! CASEMIRO DOUBLES THE LEAD WITH A CLOSE-RANGE HEADER! Chelsea are well and truly sunk!
Enzo Fernandez fails to clear an initial header across the face of goal from Patrick Dorgu, sending it sky high. When the ball eventually comes down, Filip Jorgensen doesn't come off his line leaving United to win the aerial duel. It's directed to the far post where Casemiro is waiting for the point-blank finish!
The ball was miles into the air, and Jorgensen just stood still and failed to react, he should have claimed the ball! What weak goalkeeping that is.

35th min: Chelsea have a rare foray into the attacking third, and Joao Pedro goes down in the penalty area under a challenge from Noussair Mazraoui which sends Enzo Maresca into a frenzy. Ultimately though, there's very little in that, and a quick VAR check finds no reason to intervene.
33rd min: Casemiro has the ball in the back of the net, but it won't count, as the ball had gone out of play over the end line before Amad Diallo sent in his cross.
More importantly, it appears that Cole Palmer is now back on the Chelsea bench, and has ice on his groin according to reports, which indicates he was likely substituted due to injury. That's a real worry for Chelsea as their rough day gets even worse in the Manchester rain.
Palmer had ice on his groin as he comes back out to the Chelsea bench. It effectively confirms the change was through injury. https://t.co/dZuzjnBnyU

20th min: Enzo Maresca, amazingly, is about to burn his third substitution and second sub window, on the 20th minute. He is bringing on Andrey Santos to replace...Cole Palmer?! Chelsea's biggest attacking threat is off, in the first half, with the Blues down a man and a goal. Incredible.
Palmer is furious with the change. He's thrown a strap on the bench and then left the pitch entirely, heading down the tunnel. He has no interest in watching the rest of this match in the pouring rain!
18th min: Casemiro is the first player booked as he slides in to challenge Enzo Fernandez, catching him on the back of the leg after releasing the ball. Brazil on Argentina crime, there.
14th min: GOAL! MAN UNITED!!! THERE'S THE OPENER, IT'S BRUNO FERNANDES!
Or is it????? It appears he's maybe leaning offside as the header comes in...but after a long check, VAR confirms the goal is given! The header from Patrick Dorgu is just in time, and the Man United talisman has the Red Devils in front with a close-range finish!

13th min: As you can imagine, this has been all Manchester United since the red card. They've got their work cut out for them though, since Chelsea have gone to a back five and are defending in numbers. This is going to be one-way traffic for a while.
4th min: RED CARD, CHELSEA! ROBERT SANCHEZ HAS JUST BEEN SENT OFF JUST FOUR MINUTES INTO THE MATCH! HE'S CLEANED OUT BRYAN MBEUMO WHO WAS CLEAN THROUGH ON GOAL!
Enzo Maresca wastes no time responding, as he takes Estevao AND Pedro Neto off, with Tosin Adarabioyo coming on as well as the new goalkeeper in Filip Jorgensen.

45 mins to kickoff: Ruben Amorim has said in the buildup to this game that "not even the Pope" could get him to change his approach. The Portuguese boss is riding with his 3-4-2-1 formation and tactics, regardless of whether it works or not!
Sir Jim Ratcliffe didn’t try to persuade Ruben Amorim to change his tactics. He wouldn’t have listened anyway: “No, no, no. Not once. Not even the Pope, it will not change…this is my job, this is my responsibility, this is my life.”

1 hour to kickoff: Each club has a player disappointed not to make a key appearance in the starting XI today.
For Manchester United, goalkeeper Senne Lammens continues waiting to make his Premier League debut for the Red Devils, having joined on deadline day to replace Andre Onana. Meanwhile, new Chelsea signing Alejandro Garnacho does not appear in the XI against his former club, against whom he'd surely have liked to log a strong performance.
1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lineups are in! For Man United, Amad Diallo gets to move from wing-back to attacking midfield, with Mason Mount moved to the bench and Noussair Mazraoui stepping in. For Chelsea, Malik Fofana steps in at centre-back, while Reece James moves from midfield to full-back.
1 hour 30 mins to kick: There was a report from The Sun over the last few days that Ruben Amorim may have as few as three games to save his job, but a subsequent report by Simon Stone of the Manchester Evening News said the club has internally dismissed this notion.
1 hour 45 mins to kick: According to WhoScored's algorithm, only two Manchester United players make it into the combined XI between these two clubs so far through four Premier League matches. How would you rate this lineup?

Man United vs. Chelsea lineups, team news
United received some good news on Friday as Amorim confirmed that Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount were fit to face Chelsea. That leaves Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez as their main injury absentees.
New signing Senne Lammens will keep waiting to make his Premier League debut in goal for the club. Matthijs de Ligt is expected to lead the backline, which also consists of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, although the latter had a poor game last time out against Man City.
In midfield, it will be interesting to see if Amorim bites the bullet and gives Kobbie Mainoo a start following an impressive cameo against City, although the return of Mount and Cunha could mean Bruno Fernandes drops back to partner Casemiro. Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu start at wing-back, which means Amad Diallo moves up to the attack with Mason Mount to the bench.
Man United starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Bayindir (GK) — Maguire, De Ligt, Shaw — Mazraoui, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu — Mbeumo, Diallo — Sesko.
Man United subs: Lammens (GK), Heaven, Yoro, Fredricson, Mainoo, Ugarte, Mount, Cunha, Zirkzee.
Chelsea have also been dealt their fair share of injuries as they will be without the services of Liam Delap, Levi Colwill, Dario Essugo, Benoit Badiashile and Romeo Lavia.
Having faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Enzo Maresca would ideally like to rest a few players who played in that game, but it seems unlikely that it will happen.
All eyes will be on Chelsea's talisman, Cole Palmer, who was feeling his groin towards the end of the Champions League encounter, but Maresca confirmed that he is fine to feature on Saturday.
The creative burden up front will rest on Palmer along with Pedro Neto and Estevao Willian, while Joao Pedro features as the striker. Former United winger Alejandro Garnacho will have to wait to appear against his old club.
Chelsea starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Sanchez (GK) — James, Chalobah, Fofana, Cucurella — E. Fernandez, Caicedo — Estevao, Palmer, Neto — Joao Pedro.
Chelsea subs: Jorgensen (GK), Hato, Gusto, Adarabioyo, Santos, Gittens, Garnacho, George, Guiu.
