Liverpool vs. Atletico Madrid 2020 revisited: Simeone's Anfield masterpiece as COVID crisis loomed image

Encounters between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid a rarely anything other than lively.

Take their group-stage meetings in 2021/22, when the Reds won a thriller 3-2 at the Metropolitano and prevailed 2-0 on home soil.

In both games, Atleti finished with 10 men. They had a far more successful night at Anfield on March 11, 2020.

That match, the second leg of a Champions League last-16 tie, is memorable and deeply regrettable for contrasting reasons.

What happened when Liverpool played Atletico Madrid in 2020?

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool were on the cusp of securing the club's first Premier League title in 30 years after turning the Premier League title race into a one-team procession.

They were also the reigning European champions having beaten Tottenham at Atletico's home ground in the 219 final.

Back at the Metropolitano, the Reds shipped a 1-0 first-leg defeat as they were unable to respond to Saul Niguez's fourth-minute opener.

Diego Simeone approached Atletico having their noses in front for the second game with relish. Georginio Wijnaldum headed Liverpool in front on the night shortly before half-time, but they had no more joy inside the 90 minutes as Atletico dug in for a heroic defensive display.

The visitors rode their luck as Andy Robertson hit the crossbar and goalkeeper Jan Oblak was inspired. Saul thought he'd headed Atletico to victory just before full-time but was flagged offside.

Roberto Firmino gave Klopp's men the lead early in the additional period before Atletico turned the tie on its head. First, Marcos Llorente scored an all-important away goal (that rule was still in operation) following a poor clearance from goalkeeping understudy Adrian.

Llorente fired home a second when Alvaro Morata led an incisive breakaway and, when Liverpool piled forward in vain, Morata was able to surge clear and add a third. Simeone tore onto the pitch to celebrate.

What happened after Liverpool vs. Atletico in 2020?

Liverpool did not play another game for more than three months, the Merseyside derby on June 21. Atletico were back in action only seven days earlier as the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

Lockdown measures and football returning behind closed doors quickly became familiar and, in this new reality, the decision to stage March's game at a packed Anfield came to appear reckless. By the time the game kicked off, Madrid was already under partial lockdown.

Scientists who conducted the UK's largest COVID-19 tracking project said the staging of Liverpool vs. Atletico, along with the Cheltenham Festival horse racing event during the same week, "caused increased suffering and death".
