Bayern Munich returned to the pitch on Sept. 18 as the reigning Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League champs.

Five weeks later they're going ahead without one of their biggest stars as Canada's Alphonso Davies went down with an ankle injury in the opening minutes of the club's match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Oct. 24. He will miss the next six to eight weeks.

Davies entered the 2020-21 season after a stellar year that saw him win the 2019-20 Bundesliga Rookie of the Season. During league play last season, the teenager made 29 appearances (24 starts) and netted three goals and five assists. He set a record for top speed by a Bundesliga player (since tracking technology was introduced in 2014) in the club's title-clinching victory over Werder Bremen.

He also collected four assists in eight Champions League appearances last season — including an assist against Barcelona — and subbed in late in Bayern's 2020-21 opening group stage fixture against Atletico Madrid .

Back on April 20, the Edmonton product signed a five-year deal with Bayern that will take him through 2025. He joined the club from MLS' Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019.
