Atletico Madrid are winless in their first three La Liga games of the new season after a 1-1 draw against Deportivo Alaves. Their record after three games is zero wins, two draws, and one loss.
This is statistically the worst start to the season for Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone, and it is the worst start of the season for Atleti since the 2009-10 season under the manager Abel Resino.
Atletico Madrid lost 2-1 to Espanyol and drew 1-1 to newly promoted side Elche at home.
There will be an international break, and Atletico Madrid's next game is against Villarreal on September 14. With Champions League games arriving soon, the first against Liverpool at Anfield, Atletico Madrid fans are worried about the team's start to the season.
Simone surprised many after the 1-1 against Deportivo Alaves when he said he is not worried about his team's start to the new season.
Diego Simone on Atletico Madrid's Poor Start
Simeone spoke with hope after Atleti's latest draw in La Liga, which put them 14th in the league table.
The Argentine manager is aware that the team has only gained two points out of nine points possible so far, but believes the team will eventually start picking up the points as the season goes on.
When asked if he was worried, Simeone responded that points will eventually come when the team improves. He expects the team to show better performances in the upcoming weeks.
Diego Simeone: "No [I'm not worried], I’m focused on the points. The first thing is that the team improves, and as a result of that, the points will improve… We’re going to do better than what we’re doing now. We have to keep working, keep faith, and believe.”
Simeone states that his team could've won the match against Deportivo Alaves and is confused as to how his team has conceded four goals in three games. Atletico Madrid has scored three goals in three games so far.
Diego Simeone: "Today, once again, we could have won, but we lacked decisiveness and effectiveness. We’ve conceded 4 goals in 3, and that’s hard to understand. We need to understand we have 2 points out of 9, and we must keep working. With work, we’ll recover results."
