Half of the four direct tickets to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have already been claimed in South America with two rounds of matches remaining. Runaway qualifying leader Brazil (1st, 39 points) was first to mathematically clinch a berth, and Argentina (2nd, 35 points) joined it a few days later.
Ecuador (3rd, 25 points) looks like it will soon be next in line to lock up a World Cup spot after it tacked on two points with two draws against Brazil and Peru. A win at Peru would have sent Ecuador to its fourth World Cup, but it will wait to clinch the berth on the road at already-eliminated Paraguay on March 24.
If (or when) Ecuador claims the third berth, that would leave just one more direct spot for the fourth-place team, as well as advancement to an intercontinental play-in match for the fifth-place finisher. The battle for 4th- and 5th-place promises to be fierce in the final two matches.

Uruguay (22 points) has destiny in its own hands to clinch the final direct berth available. Peru (21 points) is staying close, and currently occupies fifth place which would come with a berth in the intercontinental playoff. But Chile (19 points) and Colombia (17 points) promise a battle for that fifth spot, which will grant a single-match playoff against a team from Asia.
Further behind is Bolivia (15 points), which is on the cusp of elimination. Paraguay (13 points) and Venezuela (10 points) were officially eliminated with two matches to go.

How CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying works
It's not complicated in South America. All 10 nations play in a round-robin format with each country playing the other nine teams at home and away (total of 18 matches). It's three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for every loss.
After 18 matches, the top four teams in the standings qualify directly to Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with a ticket to Qatar on the line.
