Chelsea's worst Premier League finishes: History of points totals as Blues risk missing Europe again image

The Todd Boehly era at Chelsea has included record-breaking investment from the U.S. businessman, but the team is yet to match that with performances on the pitch.

Former boss Thomas Tuchel smashed a Premier League transfer window record with £246.5 million ($298m) spent on new players, before his replacement Graham Potter eclipsed that in January, by splashing out an incredible £288m ($350m) on additional squad reinforcements.

Boehly's huge financial injection has been a crucial talking point at Stamford Bridge in the last couple of years with current boss Mauricio Pochettino also struggling for results.

The former Spurs boss has failed to find a tune out of this current crop and could see the Blues miss out on European football for a second successive season.

What happened to Chelsea?

Boehly took the bold step of sacking Tuchel in September 2022, and replaced him with the highly-rated Graham Potter, as part of his plans for a new era in West London.

However, despite some initial signs of positivity, they endured their share of struggles following the World Cup, with another domestic cup exit handed out by Manchester City, this time in the FA Cup.

They managed to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals but were dumped out by defending champions Real Madrid.

The lack of consistency saw Potter sacked and former captain and boss Frank Lampard came in to see out the rest of the season.

They won just one game from 11 games during Lampard's interim role and they finished 12th, their lowest league finish since 1993/94.

The summer then saw the arrival of Pochettino, who again was granted a war chest of money as he splashed over half a billion dollars.

They're now struggling again in the league and could be about to miss out on European football for a second successive season.

When did Chelsea last miss Champions League?

Chelsea have now mathematically missed out on securing a place in the Champions League for the second season running. Before that, they hadn't failed to qualify since the 2017/18 season under Antonio Conte, on the back of winning the title under the Italian the previous year.

The Blues do not have the same number of Champions League qualifications as Man United or Arsenal across the Premier League era, but they have a strong record in the tournament itself.

They hoisted the Champions League trophy in 2012 (vs. Bayern Munich) and 2021 (vs. Manchester City), matching United's record of Champions League wins since 1992. Chelsea famously lost a Champions League final to Man United in 2008 on penalty kicks.
