Canada men's soccer: Time, TV schedule, streaming for Concacaf World Cup qualifying

The march to the 2022 FIFA World Cup begins for Canada when the squad heads to Florida to compete in the first of four games in the first round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying.

Canada is in Group B with Aruba, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and Suriname. They will face each team once — Canada will face Aruba and Suriname in June — and the group winner advances to Round 2 to face the winner of Group E (June 12 and 15). That winner will then play in the fall in the Concacaf Final Round.

“It is an opportunity for this group of men to do something special for their country that hasn’t been done for a long time,” said head coach John Herdman to canadasoccer.com. “Our players do not need much motivation, they’re just really excited to play for their country again and every time we’re together we remind them that this team can change football in this nation.” 

Ranked 73rd in the world, this week's games mark the first for the Canadians since January 2020.  Among the players set to represent the maple leaf is Canada Soccer's 2020 Player of the Year and 2020 Lou March co-winner Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich left-back, who is coming off a year where he won a number of trophies with the German club, including the 2020 UEFA Champions League, is one of 10 players on the roster under the age of 24.

Canada has only appeared in one World Cup, back in 1986 where they finished 24th and were shut out by France, Hungary and the Soviet Union.

The games will be held without fans and can only be viewed online.

When are Canada's World Cup qualifying matches?

• Opponent: Bermuda
• Date: Thurs., March 25
• Time: 8 p.m. ET

Canada defeated Bermuda 5-1 led by a Cyle Larin hat trick with each goal set up by Davies. Richie Laryea and Theo Corbeanu also potted goals.

• Opponent: Cayman Islands
• Date: Mon., March 29
• Time: 6 p.m. ET

Both games will be played in Florida. Serving as the home team, Canada will face Bermuda on Thursday in Orlando, Fla. at Exlporia Stadium. Sunday's match against the Cayman Islands — where Canada is technically the visitor — will be at IMG Sports Complex in Bradenton, Fla.

The game against the Cayman Islands was originally scheduled for Sunday, March 28; however, due to the Cayman Islands Football Association not submitting COVID-19 testing information in the required timeframe, the game was postponed a day.

Who is on the CANMNT roster for the 2021 Concacaf World Cup Qualifying?

A number of players were not granted permission to play after FIFA allowed clubs to deny their release. Jonathan David was not released by Lille, as he would have to quarantine when he returned to France. Jonathan Osorio will not be in attendance due to injury.
