Back in the Champions League for the first time in two years, Chelsea were reminded of their place in Europe’s most illustrious club competition as they were humbled by Bayern Munich, falling by a 3-1 scoreline in Munich to open their league phase campaign.

The reigning Conference League winners found themselves 2-0 down in what felt like a flash as a Trevoh Chalobah own-goal and Harry Kane penalty saw the hosts well in front, even if it flattered Vincent Kompany’s side through the first half-hour. The Blues had an immediate response, though, as Cole Palmer scored straight after the restart from Kane's strike, and it felt that Chelsea were right back in the thick of things.

From that point on, however, Bayern began to assert their dominance, starting with the latter stages of the first half and continuing after the break. Kane grabbed his second in the 63rd minute, taking advantage of a mistake in possession by Malo Gusto, and the Bavarians were on their way to three points.

It seemed that Palmer had given Chelsea a lifeline in the final minute of regulation, but his goal was chalked off rightly by VAR for offside, and the Blues were well and truly beaten. In truth, they were second-best throughout the second half, as Bayern asserted their dominance throughout and would have gone further in front had it not been for a sensational save by Robert Sanchez on Michael Olise.

FULLTIME: Bayern Munich 3-1 Chelsea

The Bavarians were the better side throughout the second half, and they run out as deserved winners to begin Champions League play!

Chelsea never found their highest gear after Palmer's goal to pull one back, and Enzo Maresca is left to wonder if he could have sparked a comeback had he acted sooner off the bench. This was always going to be a daunting start to Champions League play for Chelsea, but they never really looked good for a result.

90+5 min: Andrey Santos is booked for a very hard foul on his former teammate Nicolas Jackson in midfield, as Chelsea's fate is nearly confirmed.

89th min: Chance, Chelsea! The Blues think they have a lifeline as Cole Palmer finds his second goal, as he puts the ball in the net and the goal is given, but it'll be coming back! As a VAR check confirms, Palmer was offside on the delivery, and the semi-automated system chalks off the goal! It's the right call, as he's just leaning over the line on the feed by Andrey Santos down the right.

Nicolas Jackson replaces Harry Kane and will get a few minutes against his parent club. Serge Gnabry is also hauled off and replaced by 20-year-old Tom Bischof.

85th min: Michael Olise is booked for a foul on Marc Cucurella, which draws a raucous cheer from the German crowd. Cucurella is Public Enemy No. 1 in this country for his handball which wasn't called against Germany in the Euro quarterfinals last summer.

81st min: Time is starting to run out for Chelsea, as Bayern have started to lock the game down. Trevoh Chalobah needs treatment after appearing to suffer a shoulder injury, but comes back on shortly after.

Estevao will come on for his first Champions League appearance, replacing Enzo Fernandez. Cole Palmer will likely move centrally with Estevao out wide. Enzo hands the armband to Moises Caicedo.

72nd min: Bayern are threatening to put the game away here. They've upped the intensity since the Chelsea substitutions, and are all over the Blues. They're moving the ball extremely well and loading up on final third pressure. Chelsea have yet to manage a response.

68th min: Leon Goretzka comes on to replace Aleksandar Pavlovic to shore up the Bayern midfield.

Shortly after, Enzo Maresca finally dips to his bench and summons Alejandro Garnacho and Andrey Santos. Is it too little too late?

63rd min: GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH! HARRY KANE HAS HIS SECOND! That was coming, as Bayern had wrestled grip of the game away over the past 10 minutes, and Enzo Maresca will rue his slow reaction!

Malo Gusto has the ball get away from him and turns it over to Serge Gnabry, and Kane responds lightning quick to punish the Blues for their naivety!

60th min: Chance, Bayern Munich! A SENSATIONAL SAVE BY ROBERT SANCHEZ ON MICHAEL OLISE! How did Olise not score there?!?!?!?!? Harry Kane cuts the ball back to the penalty spot through the legs of a teammate, and it comes to Olise who's all alone 12 yards from goal....but he strikes it too centrally, and Sanchez dives at full-stretch to palm the ball away!

That's a truly stunning effort by the Chelsea goalkeeper, but also a massively poor finish from Olise who had nearly the entire goal to shoot at! Anywhere but low and central!

57th min: Chance, Bayern Munich! Harry Kane is denied by Robert Sanchez! Konrad Laimer starts a counter-attack and has eyes on the back of his head to see Kane streaking through vertically behind him. Laimer lays it off perfectly, and Kane strikes with  his right foot, but the angle is juuuuust too tight and Sanchez has the near post covered clinically.

55th min: Reece James and Luis Diaz trade efforts on goal which are both tame and simple for the goalkeepers to squat down and save comfortably.

48th min: Josip Stanisic has gone down holding his knee, and needs treatment from the Bayern medical staff. It appears he clashed knees with Trevoh Chalobah in the midst of an aerial duel, and seems ok to continue after a short moment.

Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for him to end up back on the turf, and it appears he cannot continue. He will be replaced by Sacha Boey as Bayern make their second change of the match. The German giants are extremely thin at the full-back position with Alphonso Davies already out injured for a while.

2nd half kickoff: Bayern Munich are making a change as the second half starts, with Jonathan Tah withdrawn and replaced by Kim Min-jae. Tah has been excellent for Bayern since joining from Leverkusen in the summer, but he's been booked in this match for a testy moment and Vincent Kompany won't be risking him further. 

HALFTIME: Bayern Munich 2-1 Chelsea

A weird, back-and-forth half comes to an end with Bayern Munich a goal to the good. Both teams showed good attacking intent, and Chelsea were probably the better side through the first 30 minutes, but ultimately came out of that spell with a deficit.

Bayern then took hold of the game over the final 15 minutes of the half, but failed to capitalise further on their dominance, and the players go into the dressing room with the game very much in the balance.

It's been an entertaining affair so far, so what will the second half have in store?

39th min: Bayern have been the better side since Cole Palmer's goal, and have begun to push towards snatching a third of their own. Michael Olise flashes a shot wide of the frame that had beaten Robert Sanchez but failed to find the net.

28th min: GOAL! CHELSEA! COLE PALMER BRINGS CHELSEA RIGHT BACK IN IT WITH A FANTASTIC COUNTER!

The Chelsea star carries it forward down the right, and plays a little one-two with Malo Gusto at the top-right corner of the penalty area which opens up the Bayern back line far too easy and brings the Blues back within a goal!

Jonathan Tah is booked for a foul in the buildup to the goal where he clashed with Joao Pedro off the ball. Enzo Maresca is also booked in the aftermath, as the Chelsea boss seems to believe Tah deserved more and argued his point too vociferously.

25th min: PENALTY, BAYERN MUNICH! Just five minutes after taking a fortunate lead, the hosts now have a chance to go two up after Harry Kane is wrestled to the ground by Moises Caicedo! The Chelsea midfielder bear-hugged his adversary as the England star went to turn on the ball at the top of the area, and while the referee took ages to think about it, he's pointed to the spot!

Kane himself will step up to take, as he always does, and...GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH! Kane sends Sanchez the wrong way, and the Blues are in an early hole as Bayern go up 2-0 within the opening half-hour!

20th min: GOAL! BAYERN MUNICH! The hosts take the lead as an own-goal finishes off a set-piece move! Josh Kimmich hits the referee with his first attempt, but on the restart Olise takes it from out wide right and cuts along the byline, and his cross whacks off the knee of Trevoh Chalobah and goes in!

16th min: This has been a very cagey match through the first quarter-hour. Bayern Munich have held the majority of possession, and both sides have done well to get into the attacking third, but they've both short-circuited once they arrive in dangerous positions.

The latest whiff is a Bayern free-kick from a Marc Cucurella handball that looks dangerous but is ultimately wasted as Michael Olise sends his far-post delivery too deep and over the end line.

6th min: Chance, Chelsea! Finally, the game opens up after a very slow start by both sides, and Enzo Fernandez gets free down the middle to receive a cross from Cole Palmer on the right. He's not able to unleash a shot, however, as the pressure from Konrad Laimer managed to put him off!

Kickoff: They're under way at the Allianz Arena! The Champions League campaign is now under way for both these clubs, as Europe's biggest competition brings with it the biggest spotlight in football.

15 mins to kickoff: There's significant pressure on Bayern Munich to perform in Europe this season. The Bavarian giants have not lived up to expectations in recent years, failing to reach the final since their European title in 2020.

For a club that considers itself one of the biggest in the world, one semifinal appearance in the last five years is disappointing. They've been bounced in the quarterfinals in all four other occasions, falling to PSG, Villarreal, Man City, and Inter, while it was Real Madrid who triumphed in their lone semifinal appearance in that span.

Is Vincent Kompany really the man to break that streak of early exits? We'll get a glimpse of their credentials for a deep run tonight.

30 mins to kickoff: Today is the 100th appearance for Cole Palmer at Chelsea, and it comes in his first Champions League appearance for the club.

Palmer has eight career Champions League appearances under his belt, but all came with Manchester City, totaling just 183 minutes and seeing him score one goal.

45 mins to kickoff: It's incredible that Chelsea signed so many wingers this summer, and Enzo Maresca begins Champions League play by leaving every single one of them on the bench, preferring to move Cole Palmer out wide instead.

The likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens, Estevao, and Facundo Buonanotte are all substitute options today, and it remains a wonder why players remain attracted to the Chelsea project when there are repeated instances of new signings being immediately cast into the purgatory of this egregiously deep squad. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see who Maresca turns to off the bench should Chelsea need an attacking injection as the game progresses.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in! Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has decided to deploy Cole Palmer out wide on the left, installing Reece James in midfield which moves Enzo Fernandez up to the No. 10 position. This leaves the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens, and Estevao on the bench.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Today's venue, Allianz Arena in Munich, is the same stage on which Chelsea won its first-ever Champions League title back in 2012.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Since joining Chelsea, the Blues stood firmly behind striker Nicolas Jackson even as he struggled with finishing chances through the early part of his time at Stamford Bridge. Then, suddenly, he was on the outside looking in, as Joao Pedro emphatically supplanted Jackson in the depth chart.

With Jackson being shopped in the summer transfer window, he seemed firmly intent on leaving, and when Bayern Munich showed interest, he took the chance to get out of London, even reportedly waiving some money to facilitate the deal.

"When Bayern calls and says they want you, you don't think twice," Jackson told German publication Bild. "You're simply excited and ready to join."

2 hours to kickoff: Bayern will hope they are better prepared for the absence of Jamal Musiala, who is missing after a horror injury in the Club World Cup over the summer. Musiala also suffered an injury late last season which scuppered the club's Champions League campaign, leaving them toothless against Inter Milan in the quarterfinals.

Now that they've had ample time to prepare for his lengthy absence, Vincent Kompany hopes that the likes of Michael Olise, Luis Diaz, and Serge Gnabry can overcome the gap in creativity to leave them better prepared for performances against top clubs.

The Bavarians will be without some key players. For instance, former Chelsea youngster Jamal Musiala is out as he continues to recover from the leg and ankle break he suffered at the Club World Cup.

Musiala is joined on the treatment table by defenders Hiroki Ito and Alphonso Davies, and Kompany's left-back dilemma is now further complicated by a rib injury to Raphael Guerreiro, who was brought on at halftime against Hamburg before having to come off again 17 minutes later.

Chelsea loanee Nicolas Jackson can play against his parent club, although he is likely to start on the bench as he backs up England star Harry Kane.

However, the visitors will be without Levi Colwill, Liam Delap, Benoit Badiashile, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, and the banned Mykhaylo Mudryk. Essugo's absence meant that Chelsea could officially add Facundo Buonanotte to their European roster after he was initially left off.

Meanwhile, teenage sensation Estevao Willian is a doubt for the Blues after missing Saturday's game through illness.
