The Champions League holders meet last season's semifinalists early in the 2025/26 league phase as Barcelona welcome defending champions Paris Saint-Germain to the Montjuic on Wednesday.

Both teams arrive with notable injury concerns, including their top Ballon d'Or contenders and key players from last campaign.

Despite that, these teams are still considered two of the best in the world and will be expected to push deep into the competition. Having both won their respective league titles last season, plus their European runs, this match could be an early litmus test for their fortunes in this season's journey.

The match will be held at Barcelona's temporary home, the Olympic Stadium, due to continued delays at the Camp Nou where they were meant to have returned by this point.

Barcelona vs. PSG live updates, highlights from Champions League

HALFTIME: Barcelona 1-1 PSG

A thoroughly entertaining first 45 minutes ends level! Barcelona will be frustrated that they do not head into the break with a lead, as they were clearly the better side through the first half-hour. Ferran Torres got the opener, but had a number of other chances go begging.

Credit an injury-stricken PSG side, as they managed to recover from the early deficit and match their high-octane opponents, and Senny Mayulu has followed up his goal in last year's Champions League final with a critical equaliser today.

A fascinating 45 minutes awaits!

45th min: Chance, Barcelona! Marcus Rashford squares it to Dani Olmo in the middle, but William Pacho recovers to reach the cross just inches before the Barcelona man did! That was vital, as he met the ball right at the near post!

44th min: Nuno Mendes is booked for barging Lamine Yamal on the touchline. He got beat by a vertical ball and shoulder checked the Spaniard out over the touchline. That could be a big moment in the match, as his battle with Lamine has been a big talking point coming in, and he may now have to be more careful than usual.

38th min: GOAL! PSG! WHOA! PSG ARE LEVEL OUT OF NOTHING!!! NUNO MENDES HAS A BRILLIANT ASSIST AND SENNY MAYULU PROVIDES A GLORIOUS FINISHING TOUCH!

Starting in his own half, Mendes goes slaloming through midfield cutting in to the middle, and he lays it off square to Mayulu at the top of the penalty area. The feed spills Pau  Cubarsi to the turf as he whiffs trying to stop the pass, and that leaves Mayulu all alone to slot it past Wojciech Szczesny!

What a wonderful goal by PSG, and it comes against the run of play as they've largely been battered this half!

29th min: Frenkie de Jong cleans out Nuno Mendes in midfield to stop a counter-attack and is the first player booked in the match. It's unclear how much of that he meant to do, because the Dutchman tripped while following Mendes and fell on his ankles, but regardless it's perceived as a tactical foul and results in a yellow card.

This could be a real problem for PSG as Mendes is down for quite a while and has a pained look on his face, but he slowly gets up and will play on.

22nd min: PSG can't get out of their own half. Dani Olmo has a shot from the top of the penalty area but his left-footed effort is off balance and skitters wide.

19th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! It had been coming, and Barcelona are in front! It comes off a rare mistake in possession from Vitinha who turns it over in midfield, and Marcus Rashford from the left squares it to Torres for the sliding finish!

14th min: Chance, Barcelona! A LAST-GASP BLOCK BY ILYA ZABARNYI KEEPS BARCELONA OUT! Lamine Yamal feeds a brilliant vertical ball with the outside of his foot to Ferran Torres, and the Spaniard rounds the goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier and appears to have an open net. At the last second, Zabarnyi gets in between of the finish and the net to keep it out!!!

PSG are incredibly lucky, as had Torres gone down under the challenge from Chevalier, he would have absolutely won a penalty!

11th min: We've only just been made aware of the fact that PSG actually started Warren Zaire-Emery in midfield, as Joao Neves does not appear. He must have been re-injured in the warmup, or was not available to go after all, despite being named in the initial starting XI.

2nd min: This game looks electric already! After an early PSG attack, Lamine Yamal runs a delicious counter down the right-hand flank and skips past three defenders, feeding a ball vertically for Pedri, but he scuffs the tight-angle shot which is blocked by his defender.

Kickoff: They're under way atop the Montjuic in Barcelona! Can PSG manage to defend their title today without their top attacking stars? Or will Barcelona make a statement of their own intent for the coming European campaign?

Barcelona vs. PSG: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: This match will be played at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, which was Barcelona's home for the last two seasons due to renovations at the Nou Camp. Their permanent venue was meant to be available again to start this season (after an extended time away to begin the La Liga campaign), but delays have pushed that back significantly.

It's a gorgeous scene above on the Montjuic, and PSG fans are in full voice.

30 mins to kickoff: Both of these teams made big goalkeeping decisions in the offseason. PSG pushed Champions League winner and superstar Gianluigi Donnarumma out the door unceremoniously, sending him to Manchester City and replacing him with Lucas Chevalier from Lille.

Barcelona brought Joan Garcia in from Espanyol, removing Marc-Andre ter Stegen from the roster in the process which angered their longtime captain. Garcia is injured for today's match, with Wojciech Szczesny in net, but the sentiment remains the same.

The start to the season for Garcia had been strong up until the injury, but for Chevalier, it's been a mixed bag. He has yet to convince the PSG faithful, and will have a lot on his shoulders today.

45 mins to kickoff: While the focus for Barcelona will be on the return of Lamine Yamal to the starting lineup after an injury layoff, keep an eye on Marcus Rashford on the opposite wing. While Lamine will have to deal with Nuno Mendes on his side of the pitch, a battle which has proven difficult for the youngster in the past, Rashford will have space in behind Achraf Hakimi.

Take a look at all our predictions, picks, and best bets from The Sporting News on Barcelona vs. PSG.

1 hour to kickoff: Whether they retain their regular 4-3-3 shape, or switch to a 4-4-2 diamond, Luis Enrique has made a big call leaving Goncalo Ramos on the PSG bench in favour of two teenagers, Ibrahim Mbaye and Senny Mayulu.

Mbaye, just 17 years old, is a PSG youth product who will play a more attacking role alongside Bradley Barcola, while 19-year-old Mayulu is more of a natural midfielder.  Mbaye is so young that he missed PSG's league match against Marseille in late September because he had an exam to take.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lineups are in! For Barcelona, Dani Olmo will start at the No. 10, with Marcus Rashford on the left in place of the injured Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal returning to his regular spot on the right.

For PSG, all three of their regular midfielders start, but the front line is a mess. In the absence of all three starters up front, it's Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye who parter, while Senny Mayulu also starts as an extra midfielder in what will likely be a 4-4-2 diamond.

PSG have so few available players that they are only able to name nine substitutes, seven of them outfield players, while Barcelona have 12 on the bench.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Both of these clubs provided over half of the top 20-ranked players at the 2025 Ballon d'Or, many of them from PSG.

However, a number of those will not participate tonight, including Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. A few others are unsure of their status, which we will find out shortly, with lineups set to be released in a quarter of an hour.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: The previous meetings between these two teams have been electric! Can today's live up to the precedent?

2 hours to kickoff: As much as the narrative of this match should be about a battle between two of the top title contenders in Europe's greatest competition, injury problems have marred the expectations for the match.

While Barcelona are without Raphinha and Joan Garcia, and Lamine Yamal is only just back from a spell on the sidelines, it's PSG who have it far worse. The Parisians could potentially be without their Ballon d'Or winner, some combination of their Ballon d'Or-nominated midfield trio, their captain, and last winter's star signing. OOF.

Barcelona vs. PSG lineups, team news

Lamine Yamal played a late cameo off the bench in Barcelona's 2-1 weekend La Liga win over Real Sociedad, and the 18-year-old will start.

Raphinha is out until after the international break with a muscle issue and Wojciech Szczesny will continue as cover for the injured Joan Garcia in goal, backed up by American youth international Diego Kochen who was recalled before the start of the U-20 World Cup. Gavi and Fermin Lopez are also sidelined, but fellow academy graduate Alejandro Balde may be fit enough for the matchday squad.

Marcus Rashford scored his first Barcelona goals in their opening UCL win at Newcastle United earlier this month and the England international will be paired with Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres in the hosts' attack. Robert Lewandowski starts the match on the bench.

Barcelona starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Szczesny (GK) — Kounde, E. Garcia, Cubarsi, Martin — Pedri, De Jong — Lamine Yamal, Olmo, Rashford — F. Torres.

Barcelona subs: Kochen (GK), Aller (GK), Balde, Christensen, Torrents, Araujo, D. Fernandez, Bernal, Casado, A. Fernandez, Bardghji, Lewandowski.

Ousmane Dembele is far from the only key player missing through injury for the visitors with three stars being added to Luis Enrique's absentee list before the flight to Barcelona.

Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia expected to be out until at least mid-October alongside captain Marquinhos

Late checks were made on Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha and Joao Neves, and all three are able to start — or so we thought, until Warren Zaire-Emery appeared on the field while Neves did not after a last-second change. Senny Mayulu joins them in midfield, while Goncalo Ramos will have to wait for his chance up front as he remains on the bench.

PSG starting lineup (4-4-2 diamond, right to left): Chevalier (GK) — Hakimi, Zabarnyi, Pacho, N. Mendes — Ruiz, Zaire-Emery, Mayulu, Vitinha — Mbaye, Barcola.

PSG subs: Safonov (GK), Marin (GK), Beraldo, L. Hernandez, Jangeal, Zaire-Emery, Lee K.I., Ndjantou, Ramos.
