Andre Onana became a divisive figure at Manchester United, and his time at Old Trafford has likely come to an end after securing a late summer move to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper joined United in the summer of 2023 from Italian giants Inter Milan, but struggled in his two seasons as the club's No. 1.

A number of high-profile errors leading to goals saw Onana lose the faith of both the fans and his head coach, Ruben Amorim. He was supplanted in the starting XI by equally shaky Altay Bayindir.

Thus, a move away from the club was the quickest resolution, and that materialised with a loan move to Trabzonspor.

The Sporting News explains more about what wages Andre Onana will make at his new club and why his foundation came into play from a financial perspective.

What is the Andre Onana Foundation?

Andre Onana's foundation, named after the man who started it, is a charity that helps provide medical care and surgery to underprivileged communities in Africa, mainly Sub-Saharan Africa, which includes Onana's home country of Cameroon.

Thanks to his charity's efforts, Onana was given the Player Impact Award in November of 2024, which is an award from the main football players' union FIFPRO that recognises efforts to create positive change in the lives of others. Marcus Rashford won the award in 2020 for his work on free school meals in England.

The charity is primarily funded by Onana himself, having donated significant amounts of his own money to the cause.

This funding was reportedly a key reason why Onana had discussions with Manchester United over his salary reduction, which took place after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League. According to reports, including Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Onana had conversations with the club after his salary was cut from £170,000 (€196,500 / $230,500) per week to £120,000 (€138,500 / $162,500) per week due to the team failing to qualify for Europe.

Andre Onana contract details, salary with Trabzonspor

Andre Onana joined Turkish club Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, with no option or obligation to buy. While he has three years left on his Manchester United contract, Whitwell's report claimed that "he is effectively ending his United career with this switch. An Old Trafford return after a season of Super Lig football is highly unlikely."

Onana will reportedly have his salary paid in full by his new club Trabzonspor, plus extra bonuses as part of his loan deal, which The Athletic reports will result in Onana's salary being set to "double."

This is due to a sign-on fee, the aforementioned bonuses, and Turkey's tax structure. Additionally, significant inflation in Turkey means that inside the country, Euros are worth much more than previously, so he may enjoy even greater take-home pay.
