Manchester City have confirmed the exit of teenage midfielder Sverre Nypan, with Middlesbrough sealing a loan deal for the 18-year-old.

The Norwegian joined Pep Guardiola’s side only this summer but will now spend the season in the Championship to gain minutes.

City paid a reported £12.5m to bring Nypan in from Rosenborg on a five-year deal, but breaking into Guardiola’s squad was never on the cards this early.

Instead, he now joins Boro boss Rob Edwards’s growing list of summer signings.

Nypan sounded upbeat when asked about his new challenge: “It’s amazing, an amazing opportunity to get. Lovely club with amazing fans that I’m really looking forward to playing in front of.”

He added that City’s long-term plan was always for him to go on loan: “Getting into the first team is really, really difficult. You need to play games when you’re at my age.”

The teenager is already in line to make his debut against Norwich City this weekend.

Who all can leave Man City this summer after Nypan?

Pep Guardiola

Nypan might not be the last to head for the exit door. City’s squad could see more trimming before the September 1 deadline.

Goalkeeper Ederson has been linked with Galatasaray, who reportedly tabled an €10m bid. If the Brazilian leaves, City are expected to chase PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

That would also put pressure on Stefan Ortega, who has slipped further down the pecking order and may look elsewhere for regular football.

Defender Manuel Akanji has also attracted interest from Turkey, while young midfielder Claudio Echeverri is close to a loan move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Academy graduate Callum Doyle is reportedly set to join Wrexham permanently, and Kalvin Phillips could finally move on after being deemed surplus to requirements.

Guardiola may not enjoy losing depth, but City’s bench sometimes looks like a luxury buffet. Trimming the numbers is all part of the plan, even if fans worry about what happens when the season heats up.
