It took years, two World Cup qualifiers, and a touch of fate — but Cristiano Ronaldo has finally kept his word to Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai.
After Portugal’s 2-2 draw with Hungary in Lisbon, Ronaldo made sure the Hungarian captain walked away with something more valuable than just a point — his match jersey.
The story between the two started long before either of them became captains. Back in 2009, a young Szoboszlai — just eight years old — stood beside Ronaldo as a mascot when Portugal played Hungary.
Fast forward to 2025, and the pair were leading their nations out onto the same pitch. Talk about football coming full circle.
Their first meeting on the field earlier in the campaign didn’t go as Szoboszlai had hoped. He had asked for Ronaldo’s shirt after the game, but the Portuguese icon had already given it away.
Ronaldo promised to make it up next time — and this week, he did exactly that.

The promise finally fulfilled by Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal looked on course for victory as Ronaldo’s brace put them 2-1 ahead.
But Szoboszlai — perhaps inspired by the man whose shirt he’d waited years for — scored a last-gasp equalizer in the 91st minute to spoil Portugal’s party.
Despite the late drama, Ronaldo showed class after the final whistle. The Al-Nassr forward reportedly sought out Szoboszlai and handed over his jersey — a promise delivered in true GOAT fashion.
When asked if he got Ronaldo’s shirt, Szoboszlai smiled and said simply, “Yes, I received it.”
It was a special night for the Liverpool midfielder, who also notched a goal and an assist. “We started well, we fought hard, and I’m proud of everyone,” he told reporters after the match.
Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes admitted Portugal were frustrated to drop points, saying: “It’s frustrating that we didn’t get the win, but we’re focused on qualifying. Every game is a lesson.”
Portugal can still secure their World Cup 2026 spot with a win over Ireland next month. As for Szoboszlai and Hungary, this draw might help them to finish 2nd in their World Cup qualifiers group.
