When Barcelona's first starting eleven of the season dropped, many Barca fans were left confused as to why Eric Garcia was starting over Jules Kounde.
Some fans speculated whether Kounde is dealing with some sort of blow or injury that hasn't been reported.
Hansi Flick was asked about this in the press conference why he chose Eric over Kounde and he said, "It has to do with what I saw from preseason. Eric deserved to play because he has been outstanding, although Jules is at a high level too."
That clears up that Kounde is not dealing with any sort of injury and it was a decision about what Flick thought was best.
Eric Garcia has been in a good run of form at right back ever since he came in for an injured Jules Kounde at the end of last season.
With Ronald Araujo entering the lineup in place of the departed Iñigo Martinez, it makes sense if Flick felt a need to make a tactical change. Martinez was exceptional with the ball at his feet and excellent passing range, something which is a weakness in Araujo's game.
To make up for that, Flick probably felt the need to opt for a more technical right back which is what Eric brings over Kounde.
Kounde is the more complete fullback but we will see if Eric can continue to displace Kounde and make his case to be the starter more often than not.
Don't be surprised if you see a lot more of Eric Garcia at right back this season.
