Barcelona hand La Masia star eye-watering contract after devastating injury setback image

Barcelona have shown huge faith in teenage midfielder Marc Bernal by handing him a long-term deal despite a year spent on the sidelines.

The 18-year-old has signed a new contract until 2029 with a release clause reportedly set at a jaw-dropping €500 million.

For a player who only just returned from ACL surgery, it’s a move that proves Barca are ready to bet big on their homegrown talent.

Bernal suffered a serious knee injury in August 2024 and spent more than 12 months recovering. He finally made his comeback earlier this month in a league win over Valencia, coming off the bench to provide an assist.

The timing of the deal, announced Monday, shows the club’s determination to lock down their brightest prospects even before they regain full rhythm.

Club president Joan Laporta, vice president Rafael Yuste, and sporting director Deco were all present for the signing.

The release clause is as eye-watering as a last-minute VAR call, but it’s also a clear warning to Europe’s richest clubs.

Despite Bernal’s limited first-team action, Barcelona see him as a key figure in their next-generation midfield, alongside Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Gavi, and Pau Cubarsi.

Coach Hansi Flick is expected to ease the youngster back into action while planning for a bigger role in the coming seasons.

Bernal’s resilience during rehab has impressed the Barca hierarchy. The club reportedly began talks while he was still in recovery, a rare gesture of trust for a player his age.

If he stays fit, the teenager could become a mainstay at Camp Nou and perhaps earn a call-up to Spain’s senior squad.

For now, Bernal’s focus will be on staying healthy and building minutes. Barcelona fans, meanwhile, can dream of another La Masia gem rising through the ranks — this time secured by a clause that might just break the transfer market.
