Manchester City midfielder Rodri has revealed the advice he gave to Arsenal summer signing Martin Zubimendi as the pair battle for a place in Spain’s midfield.
The 29-year-old endured a difficult 2023/24 season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for much of the campaign.
His injury meant he was forced to watch from the sidelines as Spain won Euro 2024, with Zubimendi stepping into his role and starting in the final against England.
Despite winning the Ballon d'Or during his recovery, Rodri admitted the award was bittersweet compared to the pain of missing the decisive months of action.
"The injury is much more significant than the Ballon d’Or," Rodri said ahead of Spain's World Cup qualifier against Turkey.
"It was a breath of fresh air at a time when I was having a really hard time. I’m happy for the recognition, but it’s of no use to me. I just wanted to be on the pitch."

Zubimendi, who turned 26 this summer, had long been admired by top clubs across Europe. Liverpool came close to signing him in 2023, but he opted to remain at Real Sociedad for another season before finally making the switch to Arsenal in July for £60 million ($80m).
Since arriving in north London, he has quickly settled under Mikel Arteta, adding control and composure to Arsenal’s midfield as they chase a first Premier League title in two decades.
For Spain, his growing influence has been recognised by Rodri himself.
"He’s a great player," Rodri said of the Arsenal newcomer.
"He has the discipline and mentality that can lead him to become one of the best, if he isn’t already. I spoke to him the other day and told him it was his time, that I was leaving him the keys to the team."
Zubimendi started Spain’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Bulgaria last week, while Rodri was introduced as a second-half substitute as he continues to build match fitness.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente later confirmed that the City midfielder is "in perfect condition" and available to start against Turkey, but Rodri's endorsement of Zubimendi highlighted where the long-term future lies.
"He's been at an incredible level and I’m happy to see the team at the same level," Rodri added.
"I feel good, I was able to play half an hour against Bulgaria and I'm ready to contribute again."
Rodri's injury layoff was felt deeply at Manchester City, who fell short of winning a record-breaking fifth consecutive Premier League title and ended the season without silverware.
He returned to domestic action before the international break, playing in City’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton, but admitted it will take time to reach his top level again.
"It was a really hard year for me," he reflected.
"To be away from the pitch for so long was the most difficult moment of my career. The Ballon d'Or helped me through, but my focus has always been on coming back stronger."
Zubimendi lined up alongside Mikel Merino in midfield as Spain faced Turkey on Sunday, while Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was named among the substitutes.
