Kiefer Sherwood trade from Canucks to Sharks gets one-sided grades image

The Vancouver Canucks' rebuild continued on Monday when they traded Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks.

The return wasn't exactly exacting for Canucks fans.

This is how Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported the deal:

  • Sharks get:  Kiefer Sherwood
  • Canucks get:  Cole Clayton, two second-round picks

The reply from World Hockey Report says it all: "That's it?"

Sherwood is on an expiring contract, which is part of the reason he couldn't command more.

At the same time, he has 17 goals already this season (two shy of his career-high) and has his usual diet of hits (210 through 44 games).

Clayton is a 25-year old defenseman who has never played in the NHL and feels more like a throw-in for the sake of the roster move than anything else.

So it's basically just the two second-round picks for Sherwood.

"Makes sense for San Jose" and "Sharks won a trade?" Were two of the other replies to Friedman's report.

Vancouver may have gotten more value if they traded Sherwood a month or two ago, but better late than never.

The Sharks could've stuck in their rebuild a bit longer, but they were close enough to a playoff spot to make a move like this that improves their team slightly this season at not a huge cost.
