Is Nicolas Roy related to Patrick Roy?

Yes, Nicolas Roy is related to Patrick Roy.

Nicolas is Patrick's son.

Patrick, of course, is the legendary Hall of Fame goaltender.

Nicolas is a forward who tries to make life difficult for opposing goalies.

Why Maple Leafs traded Mitch Marner for Nicolas Roy?

Roy's name is notable for this second reason, too: He was the return in the Mitch Marner trade with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Marner was planning on leaving Toronto in free agency at the start of July, and so the Maple Leafs got themselves involved in a sign-and-trade.

By signing Marner themselves first before dealing him, the Maple Leafs could give him an eighth year on his contract that helps the Golden Knights long term.

In return, Toronto got an asset.

In this case, the asset was Roy, who won't replace Marner by himself but is a quality player with a bright future ahead of him.
