The 2019 IIHF World Championship begins Friday, May 10, for Canada as the squad looks to head back to the podium for the first time since 2016.

Hockey Canada announced the roster last week but may now be without top player John Tavares, who injured his oblique and will return to Toronto. It's a big loss for the team that is a blend of youth and veterans but lacks a huge scoring punch.

The offense will now fall to veteran Mark Stone and first-time Team Canada member Jonathan Marchessault. However, world championship rosters are always fluid as players from teams that are eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs head to Europe to play for their country. There are big names, such as Dallas' Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, that may now be available.

On the defensive side, head coach Alain Vigneault has anointed Matt Murray as No. 1, with his future Flyers goalie Carter Hart as the backup. Murray will have in front of him Thomas Chabot (Senators) and Darnell Nurse (Oilers), who along with Kyle Turris are the only returning players from last year's team that did not medal.

Canada opens against Finland and closes out the preliminary round against the United States.

The format for the 2019 IIHF World Championship consists of two groups of eight teams. They'll play a preliminary round robin to determine seeding, followed by a single-elimination tournament. Canada drew Group A, which also includes the United States, Finland, Slovakia, France, Germany, Denmark and the recently promoted Great Britain.
