The highest paid Hughes brother is not who you would expect

Luke Hughes earned himself a healthy pay raise today with him and the Devils arriving at a 7 year $9 million contract extension today.

With the New Jersey Devils dropping the bag on Luke Hughes, a crazy fact has emerged putting in perspective just how rich the deal is.

That comes when comparing the current deals of the three Hughes brothers: Quinn, Jack and Luke. The player of that trio who makes the most is the one most would not expect and displays just how much of a change the NHL market is undergoing in this rising cap era.

Who is the richest Hughes brother?

The fresh Luke Hughes deal is surprisingly the richest of the bunch. Luke's $9 million a year surpasses Jack's $8 million and Quinn's $7.85 million. This reality shows the evolving landscape of NHL contracts today in a booming salary economy.

Hughes being the youngest and least experienced of the Hughes brothers has cashed in at the right time as the 22 year defenseman looks to be on the verge of a breakout performance on the horizon. While his contract may be steep at the moment, the hope is Hughes will assert himself as the Devils number 1 defenseman of the future.

Luke likely won't be the highest paid Hughes brother for long as Quinn awaits an extension soon with Vancouver in 2027 (Although Devils fans will be hoping he jumps ship to join his brothers in Jersey.) However he will be paid more than his brotherly teammate in New Jersey Jack Hughes for a while as he won't be due a new deal until 2030.
