The Montreal Canadiens have made a subtle move to make their team better.
They're bringing back an old friend, Phillip Danault.
On Friday night, the Canadiens announced they have acquired the forward Danault from the Los Angeles Kings for a second-round pick (via the Blue Jackets).
Danault played for the Canadiens previously from 2015 through 2021.
Why did the Canadiens trade for Phillip Danault?
This is simply a case of trying to get better. They also needed to get it done before the winter roster freeze.
The Canadiens are 18-12-4, second place in their division.
Getting an established veteran like Danault adds to the depth in Montreal to try and make noise the rest of this season.
Danault is 32 years old, and he's got five assists through 30 games this season.
For the Kings, Danault has played about 16 minutes per night.
He'll settle into the middle-six somewhere for the Canadiens and bring a steadying presence to a team that's already pretty good. Montreal is hoping Danault can make them just a little bit better.
