Barkov injury may open up cap space for Florida to make major trade image

With the Panthers likely losing their trusted captain Alex Barkov for the season, it is easy to write this team off as they face an unprecedented challenge in keeping their Stanley Cup success going.

Alex Barkov is not the type of player that can be replaced, his attributes on both sides of the puck are second to none. No one is more important to this Florida Panthers team than him.

It is hard to find any positives in a difficult situation such as this. But, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel that could save the Panthers chances this year.

What is the potential path forward for Florida?

Barkov has not yet been ruled out for the entire season, it's unclear at the moment with a 7-9 month injury timeline that could theoretically see him return in the playoffs. Although many close to Florida have stated those hopes are unlikely.

If the Panthers decide to bite the bullet and declare Barkov out for the year, that could open up $10 million in cap space for the team to utilize in efforts to reload. Via insider Chris Johnston, he expects Florida to get aggressive in trade efforts in the future as they navigate a tricky Barkov-less season.

Johnston mentioned how the Panthers have one of the most active management teams in the league under GM Bill Zito. So, a blockbuster move in the cards soon would not be a surprise to see. We'll see what magic Florida can cook in a season that has the makings of the squads biggest test yet.
