The biggest question mark for the Edmonton Oilers heading into this 25-26 season, outside of the Connor McDavid contract extension situation, is the goaltending.

For now, Edmonton appears content with rolling the same Skinner-Pickard tandem moving forward. But depending on how the season develops, they may need to make changes in net if volatility continues in the crease.

Caleb Kerney of Heavy Sports has identified a potential goaltending target for the Oilers that may ruffle some feathers: Former Philadelphia Flyers goalie Carter Hart.

Why would the Oilers pursue Hart?

Carter Hart has not suited up in NHL action since midway through the 23-24 season. He has been out of the game since due to charges of an alleged incident that took place when Hart was a goaltender with Team Canada during the 2018 World Juniors. Carter and his Canadian teammates have recently been found not guilty in court, meaning pending an internal NHL investigation Hart may be cleared to return to action as soon as this season.

Of course, there are a few important factors at play here when it comes to the dilemma of whether to sign Hart. The on ice talent is no question, if cleared he will no doubt attract plenty of suitors. For the Oilers, Hart would be potentially the best goalie on the market for a team that has desperately needed an upgrade in the position. However, this would be a controversial move for a team that already has enough baggage as it is with the hiring of reinstated general manager Stan Bowman last year.

Edmonton must consider all options with this important choice when the time comes. The pressure is on in Oil country this season going into the final year of McDavid's contract.
