What happened to Jayden Daniels? Why Marcus Mariota is Commanders' starting QB image

The Washington Commanders are going to need to rattle off some wins to save their season.

They're going to have to do it with backup quarterback Marcus Mariota as the new starter in place of the injured Jayden Daniels.

Mariota's new stint starts Sunday in Week 10. The Commanders take on the Detroit Lions in the late afternoon window.

In a bit of irony, Mariota was once the No. 2 overall pick, just like the player he is replacing, Daniels.

The Commanders and their fanbase will hope he can play like a guy once drafted that high.

What happened to Jayden Daniels?

Daniels suffered a nasty injury on Sunday Night Football in Week 9.

Still in the game in the fourth quarter with a 31-point deficit, Daniels took off on a run and was taken down awkwardly.

His left arm bent at an unnatural angle, and it was eventually determined Daniels had dislocated his elbow.

He had his arm put in a cast and immobilized, and he walked off with a couple trainers.

When is Jayden Daniels coming back?

Jayden Daniels may not be out as long as initially thought.

The Commanders didn't even place him on Injured Reserve, which would've come with a four-game mandatory absence.

That suggests Washington might believe Daniels can get back with less than four games missed.

Mariota will try to keep the ship afloat in the meantime.
