Mike McDaniel to Washington Commanders makes too much sense to not happen image

The Washington Commanders are in need of new offensive and defensive coordinators after firing both Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt, respectively, this week after a 5-12 season. The former was more of a shock than the latter, considering the job Kingsbury did with Jayden Daniels in 2024 to help the Commanders reach the NFC Championship Game. Regardless, Washington moved on and will need to find a name that can take Daniels and the offense to the heights it reached last season, and one just fell right in their lap.

The Miami Dolphins made the surprise decision to fire head coach Mike McDaniel. Owner Stephen Ross released a statement on the matter.

"After careful evaluation and extensive discussions since the season ended, I have made the decision that our organization is in need of comprehensive change," Ross said. "I informed Mike McDaniel this morning that he has been relieved of his duties as head coach. I love Mike and want to thank him for his hard work, commitment, and the energy he brought to our organization. Mike is an incredibly creative football mind whose passion for the game and his players was evident every day. I wish him and his family the best moving forward."

The Washington Commanders should hire Mike McDaniel

There are few better names available for the Commanders to pursue than McDaniel. While he may not be the guy teams look at for another head coaching job right away, he has a terrific mind for the offensive side of the ball and could build his shine in Washington with Daniels and Terry McLaurin, plus pieces that the Commanders add in the offseason.

Washington needs to hit a home run with their OC hire, and McDaniel would be as good a hire as they could get. Plus, his connections to general manager Adam Peters from their time with the San Francisco 49ers would bring a level of comfortability that could lure both parties together.
