The Washington Commanders have made massive changes to their coaching staff after a 5-12 season. Both offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt have been let go from the coaching staff. And while the latter makes sense - the defense was the worst in the NFL in total yards allowed per game - the firing of Kingsbury is a bit more polarizing.
Washington had several injuries on offense this season, which included both Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin missing significant time. Despite this, Washington still averaged more yards per game than three playoff teams - the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Carolina Panthers.
According to Jordan Schultz, several players, including Jayden Daniels are unhappy with Kingsbury being let go.
"My understanding is that key Commanders offensive players, including QB Jayden Daniels, are disappointed with the team’s decision to part ways with OC Kliff Kingsbury," Schultz reports. "Daniels vouched for him to stay in his presser on Monday and was among those blindsided by the move. Offensive players on the team figured the only way Kingsbury would be gone is if he got a HC job."
The Commanders were one of the top offenses in the NFL in 2024, finishing third in rushing yards en route to the NFC Championship Game. Daniels was Offensive Rookie of the Year, and the offense largely carried a poor defense to the NFC Title Game before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, the Commanders will have to find the right guy that can at least replicate what Kingsbury was able to accomplish, which will be no easy feat.
