The Tennessee Titans are making a major change on the offensive side of the ball ahead of their Week 4 game against the Houston Texans.
Embattled head coach Brian Callahan told reporters on Tuesday that he is giving up play-calling duties and is handing them over to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree.
Callahan added that he isn't unhappy with his play-calling, but rather he wants to be able to focus more on his head-coaching duties.
While not a surprising decision considering how disastrous things have been for the Titans in the Callahan era, it is odd that Callahan isn't allowing the team's offensive coordinator, Nick Holz, to call plays.
"He is such a valuable part of our process," Callahan said of Hardegree back in February. "I lean on him a lot, trust him. He is a really, really good quarterbacks coach. There's two parts to coaching – obviously the schematic part, and the position coaching part, technique and details and fundamentals. I think Bo is excellent at both. I don't think Bo is going to be with us forever."
It's an understandable change for the Titans, who have struggled mightily throughout Callahan's tenure and desperately need a spark.
Through three games, the Titans rank 31st in total yards, 32nd in passing yards, 28th in rushing yards and 28th in points.
That is particularly troubling because the Titans are trying to develop a franchise quarterback in Cam Ward.
All that said, this might be all for naught.
What Tennessee is really lacking is talent on the offensive side of the ball. The Titans have arguably the worst offensive line in the NFL and their group of pass-catchers leaves a lot to be desired, also.
That is not an ideal situation for a rookie quarterback and it's no surprise that Ward and the Titans have been struggling as a result.
Callahan had better hope this works because he is running out of time to get this ship righted.
