Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is having quite the breakout campaign.
In just his third season, the next great wide receiver out of Ohio State University has exploded onto the scene as a top pass-catcher in the NFL. Smith-Njigba currently leads the league in yards with 1,637.
NFL Network's Tom Pellissero had a panel of league executives and general managers vote on the upcoming league awards, including MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year, and JSN was voted the most likely to take home a prestigious honor.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba voted to win Offensive Player of the Year
Pellissero's group of voters thinks Smith-Nijgba has been the best offensive player in the NFL this year.
"Smith-Njigba received 15 votes on the strength of his league-leading 1,637 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 104 receptions -- his second straight season in triple-digits. He has done it on a Seahawks team that passes just 51% of the time, third-fewest in the NFL," wrote Pellissero.
"Still only 23 years old, JSN is responsible for 44% of the Seahawks’ receiving yards this season, which would be the highest single-season share since Brandon Marshall had 45.7% with the Bears in 2012."
While Puka Nacua is right on his heels in terms of total statistical output, JSN's importance to his offense edges him out for OPOY.
What Smith-Njigba has been able to accomplish in an offense where he's the only real threat at wide receiver is incredibly impressive, and the Seahawks would not be as potent offensively without his services.
