The San Francisco 49ers have already been bitten by the injury bug early on this season and wide receiver Jauan Jennings is one of its victims.

Jennings had been dealing with a calf injury since training camp and was listed on the injury report with the issue last week before ultimately suiting up and totaling two catches for 16 yards.

However, the veteran wideout picked up a shoulder injury in the contest and is once again on the injury report this week. He failed to log a single full practice all week before drawing a questionable tag. Jennings did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday before being a limited participant on Friday.

On Saturday night, we got a status update on Jennings ahead of the Sunday afternoon matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Jennings is a true game-time decision for the contest against the Saints, although Rapoport adds that "there is optimism" he plays.

"49ers WR Jauan Jennings, suffering from a shoulder injury, is considered to be a game-time decision, source said. There is optimism he goes. But he’ll workout pregame to see," Rapoport reported.

If Jennings can't go, we could see Ricky Pearsall absolutely peppered with targets, as the Niners are also without tight end George Kittle (IR, hamstring) and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (PUP, knee).

But, bear in mind, there should be a drop-off in quarterback play, as Mac Jones is filling in for the injured Brock Purdy (toe, shoulder).

As far as who stands to benefit the most from Jennings' absence is concerned, it's a very crowded situation, with guys like Russell Gage, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Kendrick Bourne all being possible options.

In fantasy football, you're avoiding every 49ers wide receiver but Pearsall. Jennings isn't a good starting option even if he plays thanks to the risk of re-injury and the fact that Jones is starting instead of Purdy.
