The New York Giants are officially searching for their next head coach after moving on from Brian Daboll, and the move they make now will shape the next phase of this rebuild.

With expectations somewhat high but the roster still a work in progress, this feels like a moment where experience could outweigh upside.

That’s where Mike McCarthy enters the conversation. The former 49ers offensive coordinator and longtime NFL head coach has some love from the Giants fan base, and he’s proven he can succeed with a good quarterback.

His recent runs in Green Bay and Dallas ended without the postseason success that many expected, but he still got there.

The Giants might not be a Super Bowl-ready roster. Some view it as a risk, but if McCarthy does what’s needed, it’s tough to see why it’d be.

Despite that, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report predicted McCarthy could be the choice, but he worded it as a risk rather than a sure thing.

“Would it be the right move? It's risky considering the lack of success he's had in recent years with Green Bay and Dallas, but he's also got Super Bowl pedigree and oversaw the emergence of Aaron Rodgers as well as some very good years from Dak Prescott.

“The 62-year-old could perform differently with less immediate expectations in this situation. Few expect the Giants to be a Super Bowl team in 2026. A first-time coach carries risk as well, and I'm not sure they would want to take on another former Bills staffer right after Brian Daboll failed to pan out,” he wrote.

For a Giants team desperate to start winning, McCarthy would show they plan to do just that, or at least try, in 2026.
