Eagles DC compares 49ers' quarterbacks ahead of wild-card matchup image

The San Francisco 49ers are taking on the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Memorial Field for the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Sunday will be the first time these teams have faced off in the playoffs since the 2023 NFC championship, where the Eagles won in dominating fashion. 31-7.

Much like in that conference championship, Purdy was injured for the majority of this season due to a turf toe injury, and when that happened, backup quarterback and former Patriot, Mac Jones, took over and led the team to a 5-3 record in Purdy's absence, and impressed many people, including the Eagles' defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio. He made it known uniquely during his Tuesday press conference.

Fangio doesn't see a difference in Purdy and Jones' skill set

When asked about the difference in skillsets between the former first-rounder and the 2022 Mr. Irrelevant signal caller, this is what Fangio had to say.

"Not that much. They were very successful with Mac playing. I think he started eight games, and they won five or six. Mac's a really good quarterback, and he's where he should have been from the start." Fangio said.

Of course, those comments rubbed 49ers fans the wrong way because, in a sense, they discredit the talent of the $265 million quarterback, which is the perfect strategy Fangio could have used.

Whether Fangio's statements were to drive controversy purposefully or to genuinely uplift Jones and give him his props, causing the 49ers or even Purdy himself to question his ability, could be the edge the defending champions are looking for heading into their win-or-go-home matchup.
