Brock Purdy fantasy injury update: How 49ers' backup QB Mac Jones impacts outlook for Christian McCaffrey, Ricky Pearsall image

Brock Purdy's injury status for Week 2 was a bit surprising.

He apparently came out of the San Francisco 49ers' season-opening win with injuries to his left shoulder and to a toe.

This is what ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday evening:

"Brock Purdy has a left shoulder and toe injury that make him uncertain for Sunday’s game in New Orleans. Kyle Shanahan said the team will see how the practice week goes."

Anyone with a piece of the 49ers in their fantasy league is probably questioning what happens now.

Who is the 49ers' backup QB?

The San Francisco 49ers' backup quarterback is Mac Jones.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan once really wanted Jones.

Heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, Shanahan had his eyes on two QBs: Trey Lance, and Jones.

The 49ers ended up taking Lance No. 2 overall out of North Dakota State, and that didn't work out at all.

Reports during the 2021 draft season had the 49ers tied to Lance and Jones, and Shanahan actually admitted as much on a podcast in 2022 when discussing their trade up to the No. 3 overall selection to draft a quarterback.

“We did the trade so early that it made me feel good about it," Shanahan said. "I knew before we did it how I felt about the quarterbacks and how good we would be to take them at 12. There were two that I really wanted... Mac Jones and Trey [Lance]. Those were the two guys that we were locked in on from the beginning.”

Now, Jones signed with the 49ers to be their backup after stints in New England and Jacksonville.

Fantasy replacements for Brock Purdy injury

If Brock Purdy is your fantasy football starting quarterback and you don't have a backup, options that are available on waivers in more than half of ESPN leagues include:

  • Trevor Lawrence
  • Michael Penix Jr.
  • Aaron Rodgers
  • Daniel Jones

Lawrence has long-term upside this season. He'd be the preference to pick up, for sure.

Christian McCaffrey fantasy outlook with Brock Purdy injured

As long as CMC is healthy, he's in your lineup, no questions asked.

Jones shouldn't be a huge problem, either. He doesn't mind throwing short. McCaffrey could rack up a bunch of receptions in short order.

The only concern would be the 'Niners leaning too heavily on McCaffrey if Purdy is out, but they know how important their superstar RB is and will surely be careful.

Ricky Pearsall fantasy outlook with Brock Purdy injured

You might think it makes sense to sit Pearsall, but hold on.

The New Orleans Saints are an opponent that can be scored on. Marvin Harrison Jr. had a solid game against them in Week 1.

And Jones set up Jaguars star Brian Thomas Jr. for multiple massive performances in 2024.

Jones can get the ball to his top wideout. With everyone else in San Francisco hurting, Pearsall has real upside this week, at least as a FLEX play.
