One of the stories of the NFL offseason was Brock Purdy's contract negotiations with the San Francisco 49ers.
Would they pay the guy who was once Mr. Irrelevant, chosen with the very last pick in his NFL Draft?
Turns out, they paid him quite handsomely.
Purdy signed a five-year contract extension over the summer that's worth $265 million.
And then he had a season that didn't quite justify that.

Purdy missed a lot of time with injury, and in his absence, Mac Jones looked very solid leading the 49ers' offense.
And then to end the season, Purdy put together a pair of clunkers sandwiched around a solid performance.
The 49ers could've won the NFC West if Purdy showed up in Week 18 against the Seahawks, but instead they scored just three points.
And then after beating the Eagles, the 49ers got run off the field by Seattle in the NFC's Divisional Round.
This isn't to say the 49ers shouldn't have paid Purdy. Quarterbacks in the NFL get paid. It's the most important position in sports.
But after the way this season ended, there will be questions. Not all these contracts age well.

Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray, for example, both look like bad investments for the Dolphins and Cardinals, respectively.
Purdy has a lot of time to prove the deal right.
But at least right now, the proof hasn't arrived yet.
