The San Francisco 49ers are re-signing quarterback Adrian Martinez to their practice squad, after releasing him in the wake of Brock Purdy's return last week, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
"#49ers QB Adrian Martinez cleared waivers today and is expected to land back with the SF practice squad, source said. He served as the backup while Brock Purdy was hurt," wrote Rapoport in a post on X.
Martinez served as Mac Jones' backup when Purdy was recovering from his toe injury.
49ers re-sign Adrian Martinez to practice squad
Martinez was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State in 2023, before being waived ahead of the regular season.
He then spent 2024 with the UFL's Birmingham Stallions and was named league MVP for his 1750 yards, 15 touchdowns, and three interceptions season.
Martinez went on to spend training camp with the New York Jets in 2024 and 2025, before being released as part of the 53-man roster cutdowns.
Since August 27th, he's been a member of the 49ers and went from the third-string quarterback to backup in the wake of Purdy's injuries.
Martinez saw his first NFL snap in Week 9 against the New York Giants, taking a knee for Jones, who had subbed out after a stellar performance.
Who knows what the 25-year-old's career will become, but learning under Kyle Shanahan is a great place to start, especially for an NFL quarterback.
