For 49ers general manager John Lynch, there was no surprise.
He didn't expect Brock Purdy to miss the opening day of San Francisco's offseason program, regardless of contract negotiations.
"That’s Brock," Lynch told reporters. "He’s a pro... We’re grateful for him and looking forward to having him as our QB a long time."
Lynch's offseason line of questioning from reporters, despite the NFL Draft being this week, was always going to be centered around Purdy.
Whether the 49ers can get a deal done with their franchise quarterback is their most important story of the offseason.
QBs don't grow on trees in the NFL, and without a deal with Purdy, the future in San Francisco would be a lot murkier.

Lynch described negotiations with Purdy as "going in a good direction."
That's generally what the public felt as soon as news broke that Purdy was attending the offseason activities. There was some speculation that if the sides were far apart, Purdy would skip.
Lynch didn't think that, but it had to be encouraging to see No. 13 out there anyway.
Purdy has been one of the great gems of recent 49ers history. He was the literal last pick of his draft, Mr. Irrelevant, but has become an above-average NFL quarterback.
Even with injuries around him last season, he found a way to keep the 49ers in games. Their final record may have been a disappointment, but that wasn't entirely on Purdy.
He might not be the best QB in football, but he's seemingly good enough to have earned his payday.
And it sounds like that day might be coming sooner rather than later.
