The San Francisco 49ers made head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch available to the media on Wednesday and they provided very clear updates on the futures of quarterback Mac Jones and wideout Brandon Aiyuk.

When it comes to Jones, Shanahan revealed that he expects the backup quarterback to remain in San Francisco next season, although he acknowledged the team is always going to listen to trade offers.

"You always listen to people with trade offers, but we're also not into getting rid of good players. And so I'd be very surprised if Mac wasn't around us next year," Shanahan said.

The belief has been that Jones is a trade candidate in 2026 because he is likely to draw interest from quarterback-needy teams after playing well in place of an injured Brock Purdy this past season.

It's understandable why the Niners would want to hold on to Jones in 2026, but this could just be posturing by San Francisco in order to drum up more interest and try to get a better return for the veteran signal-caller.

As far as Aiyuk is concerned, ever since news broke that the team voided the guarantees in his contract due to issues over his rehab and other things, the expectation has been that the team would part ways him.

Lynch confirmed that is indeed the expected outcome.

"I think it's safe to say he's played his last snap with the 49ers," Lynch said.

The Aiyuk situation leaves the 49ers precariously short at wide receiver going into the offseason, as Jauan Jennings is a free agent and isn't guaranteed to be back.

While the Niners' quarterback situation is set, at least at the top of the depth chart, San Francisco has a lot to figure out at wide receiver.
