Very few NFL teams keep four tight ends active on gameday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a rarity in that regard. Darnell Washington, Jonnu Smith, Pat Freiermuth and Connor Heyward usually all make it onto the gameday roster.

They all get used, too.

It's not uncommon for multiple of them to have key catches, or even touchdowns, in the same game.

Why do Steelers use 4 tight ends?

The simple answer is that each tight end has a specific skillset that is useful for the Steelers.

Washington is practically an extra offensive lineman, and his size also makes him a great red zone target.

Smith is awesome after the catch, so he can be used on short passes and screens.

Freiermuth is more of a classic big tight end to throw to down the seam.

Heyward does most of his work on special teams, but he can align in the backfield to block like a fullback, and he's also a decent pass catcher.

Together, this quartet gives the Steelers a unit unlike any other in the NFL.

They'll get the spotlight in Week 10 on Sunday Night Football. Don't be surprised if multiple have an impact on the game.
