A lot has changed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025, but one thing that hasn't is the wide receiver situation.
Pittsburgh had big issues at the position in 2024 thanks to not having much behind former No. 1 wideout, George Pickens. It seemed Pittsburgh solved that issue by trading for DK Metcalf, only to turn around and send Pickens packing to Dallas.
With the season just a few weeks away, the team is likely to start Calvin Austin opposite Metcalf and other options at the position include Roman Wilson, Robert Woods, Ben Skowronek and Scotty Miller, among others.
With such a wide open situation at the position, you would think the veteran Woods would have no issue making the roster, but Steelers Wire's Curt Popejoy predicts he will ultimately miss the cut.
Popejoy has the Steelers keeping five receivers: Metcalf, Austin, Wilson, Skowronek and Miller. Here's what he said about the projection.
If the Steelers add a sixth wide receiver, I don't think it's automatic that it's Robert Woods. I love what rookie Max Hurleman brings but he's probably a practice squad candidate.
We have not heard much from Woods throughout the preseason, and then we got a clear indication that the 33-year-old's roster spot might be in jeopardy last weekend.
Following the preseason Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Steelers Depot's Alex Kozora noted that Woods played more snaps in the fourth quarter (six) than he did in the first half (five).
Meanwhile, guys like Wilson, Miller and even Brandon Johnson didn't see action after the second quarter. It goes without saying that's a terrible sign for Woods, as veterans who are safe never play that late into a preseason game. Also, it appears Woods is behind all of those players in the pecking order.
It really wouldn't be all that surprising if Woods doesn't make the cut. After all, he has been on a clear decline for a few years now and there's a good chance he doesn't have much left in the tank in 2025.
Whether Woods makes the roster or not, it remains very clear that the Steelers need to do something. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.
