After comments he made last month, some Pittsburgh Steelers fans are wondering if the team might sign free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
When Beckham was a guest on the Club Random Podcast hosted by Bill Maher in July, he revealed that he's had "conversations" with Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and didn't rule out possibly playing in Pittsburgh in 2025.
“I love him, and we’ve had conversations,” Beckham said of Rodgers. “I won’t say that it’s not a possibility and I won’t say that I haven’t had any communication.”
Beckham also noted that he thought he would land with the Steelers in the 2014 NFL draft before the New York Giants ultimately took him at No. 12.
A Steelers-Beckham pairing makes sense, as the Steelers could use more help at the wide receiver position with a ton of uncertainty behind DK Metcalf.
As Chat Sports' Jack Sperry pointed out, Beckham has plenty of connections to Steelers players. Here's the ones Sperry listed:
Odell Beckham Jr.'s Steelers connections
- "He and Aaron Rodgers are friends & A-Rod has pushed to play with him both in Green Bay and in New York over the years."
- "A number of OBJ’s former teammates such as Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, Patrick Queen, Robert Woods, and Ben Skowronek are on the team."
- "He and DK Metcalf are both brand ambassadors for Lululemon and have recently appeared in commercials for the brand together."
Aaron Rodgers on Odell Beckham friendship
"Odell and I have been friends for a number of years now and so, we keep in contact often," Rodgers said in 2022. "We talked at various times over the years. Obviously, with a player like that, you’re always hoping there’s a time where you can figure things out and play together."
Beckham was teammates with Queen in Baltimore and Smith in Miami, and he won a Super Bowl with Woods, Ramsey and Skowronek with the Los Angeles Rams.
Thanks to injury and age, Beckham's stats have fallen off a cliff since 2020. Last season, he appeared in nine games for the Miami Dolphins and recorded just 55 yards on nine scoreless catches.
Despite his lackluster showing, Beckham has made it clear on multiple occasions he doesn't plan on retiring, so he could be an option for Pittsburgh.
That said, he's far from guaranteed to be able to help the Steelers, but at the cheap price he'll command, taking a swing on Beckham would be a worthwhile venture for Pittsburgh.
